The Department of Sociology offers a major and a minor in Sociology.

Sociology is the systematic study of societies, groups, and human interaction. As a community of social scientists committed to the Christian faith, the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ sociology faculty seek to educate students in the perspectives and methods of sociology in order to prepare them for faithful service and leadership.

The Department of Sociology's goals are for students to develop a sociological imagination that allows them to critically apply sociological perspectives to social institutions and problems, to learn the skills of research design, data collection, and data analysis. Students also explore the interrelationship between Christian faith and sociology so they can critically and faithfully apply their sociological knowledge in their work, communities, and spiritual life.

By training students in the sociological perspective, they are well prepared to work toward the SPU mission of "engaging the culture and changing the world" with wisdom and grace in accordance with the best sociological knowledge and practice.

SPU students majoring in Sociology have obtained positions in international community development, NGOs, social service agencies, and with research groups. Graduates have also obtained graduate degrees in Sociology, Law, Social Work, Social Policy, and Counseling.
