Balloon Tracking Device 12 (BTD12)
Project Topic: Reusable Stratospheric Balloon Beacon
Description: The BTD12 team aims to improve the operational capability of the ASEN 1400 Freshman projects course where students design a payload to send to the stratosphere. The overarching goal of this project is to create a system that the instructor of this course can utilize to carry the payloads to the stratosphere, self-terminate, and then track the landing so that the students can actively and meaningfully participate in the tracking process from launch to retrieval.
The system will be a reusable stratospheric balloon beacon that will ascend then initiate a free-fall descent and undergo landing, with an on-ground mobile operator tracking and following the beacon’s precise location throughout.
