CubeSat Extendable Magnetosphere Boom Assembly (CEMBA)
Project Topic: Small Satellite Deployable Booms for Magnetosphere Testing
Description: CEMBA seeks to design a deployable boom-sensor assembly that allows a payload to measure the magnetosphere in a low-noise environment. For space research, spacecraft often hinder the collection of accurate data due to electromagnetic interference (EMI) from onboard electronics, which can compromise sensor readings. The extendable boom reduces EMI by physically offsetting the sensor from the spacecraft. A key design challenge is ensuring a smooth transition from a compact, stowed configuration to a fully extended operational state, while accommodating significant changes in the boom’s dimensions.
