��«��Ƶ Smead Aerospace Entrepreneur-in-Residence Mark Sirangelo has been elected a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

AIAA confers the distinction of Fellow in recognition of notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences or technology of aeronautics and astronautics.

Sirangelo is specifically being recognized for "outstanding leadership, innovative entrepreneurship, and passionate mentoring in the aerospace industry, and for critical advice and counsel to state and federal agencies."

He has lead program teams that participated in over 300 space missions, including over 20 planetary missions and 70 NASA missions. He has been a member of the Smead Aerospace faculty since 2018, following a long tenure as head of Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Space Systems and CEO of SpaceDev, its predecessor company.

He has served as a special assistant to the NASA administrator for the space agency's Moon to Mars program, been the Chairman of the Defense Innovation Board for the Secretary of Defense and is a previous Chief Innovation Officer of the State of Colorado.

Sirangelo was recently named one of "10 Power Players in Private Space You Don't Know But Should" by U.S. News and World Report.

He will be officially inducted by AIAA in April.

Renowned astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson shared stories from his life and career during a special webinar with the Ann and H.J. Smead Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences.

Tyson took part in a discussion hosted by Entrepreneur-in-Residence Mark Sirangelo on Wednesday, Nov. 3. The conversation included anecdotes from Tyson’s past, projections on the future of space and physics, and featured a Q&A with student attendees.

“I knew I was interested in the universe from age nine and my first visit to my local planetarium,” Tyson said. “It focused my attention, decisions, the books I would read.”

Growing up, he stuck with science even when faced with teachers who didn’t support his interests.

“They said, ‘Why don’t you join the basketball team?’ They don’t even know the bias dripping in that,” Tyson said.

During the webinar, Tyson challenged attendees to learn as much as they could, and to take harder classes, even if it meant earning a lower grade, as a way to have additional knowledge valuable to employers.

“Learn as deeply as you can how the universe works,” he said. “What matters is what have you done with yourself. What is your knowledge base relative to other people?”

He suggested students review the decadal surveys published by working groups in the National Academies as a way to stay on top of where science and engineering research are likely to be focused in the future.

Tyson is particularly excited about potential new scientific discoveries from the soon-to-launch James Webb Space Telescope, and offered kudos to the engineers who designed and built it.

“I’m a scientist, so we figure out different stuff out from you (as engineers). But you guys have the fun part,” Tyson said. “If you go back 50 years and they were saying how will we ever get big telescopes in space? Then people figured out that you could fold telescopes. In fact this one is hexagonal and the hexagons unfurl.”

In response to a student question about how to balance life and obligations, Tyson acknowledged there are not enough hours in the day to do all he wants.

“Things fall through the cracks and I’m always having to triage. Some things I wanted to study I don’t,” he said.

He discussed concerns about the politicization of science and misinformation in media, and how tribalistic urges inherent in humans often push us into opposing corners even when we agree on many things.

“It’s hard. I’d like to believe that it is not intractable,” Tyson said. “When I grew up there was fighting in Northern Ireland. Catholics are fighting the Protestants? What? Do they have different skin color? No. If Catholics can fight Protestants, then any two people in the world can fight each other for any reason at all.”

Tyson’s appearance was part of Mark Sirangelo’s ongoing Future Insights webinar series for aerospace students. Upcoming talks include Robert Geckle, CEO of Airbus US Space and Defense on Nov. 17, and Mark Esper, former Secretary of Defense, on Dec. 15.

Bios: Dr. Keith Gremban is the Co-Director of the Spectrum Policy Initiative at the Silicon Flatirons Center, and also a Research Professor in Aerospace at CU ��«��Ƶ. Keith has spent over 30 years in the defense industry as a software architect and systems engineer, with R&D experience in robotics, command-and-control systems, tactical communications, and spectrum science. In 2011, Keith joined the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) as a Program Manager in the Strategic Technologies Office, where he was responsible for a portfolio of programs in wireless communications and electronic warfare. In 2015, Keith became the Director of the Institute for Telecommunication Sciences (ITS) in ��«��Ƶ, which is the research and engineering laboratory of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA). Keith received his PhD and MS in Computer Science from Carnegie Mellon University, and an MS in Applied Mathematics and BS in Mathematics from Michigan State University.

Mark N. Sirangelo created and hosts the CU Future Insight Seminar Series as CU’s Entrepreneur-Scholar in Residence. He is the recent Chairman of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Board and the DoD’s Space Advisory Committee. Why should students join AIAA?

I believe that, beyond the national level aerospace and engineering education that is available at CU ��«��Ƶ, it is really important for a student to begin to build a wide and strong foundation in the industry. AIAA is an organization that is primarily focused on developing the individual more than the organization.

The experiences you can receive through being part of AIAA will not only make you better qualified for your future job but will also help you build connections that can last throughout your career.

There are many special parts of the student sector of AIAA including an active mentorship program, an expansive career center and active engagement programs and events where you can meet peers through the world.

There are also competitions that you can join or individually or as a team to work on simulated real-world problems. These competitions allow you to gain valuable actual experience while receiving constructive feedback and advice from experts all of which can bolster your knowledge and resume.

You’re putting up your own money up to encourage students to join. Why?

The aerospace industry has provided me with some of the most amazing, memorable and life changing memories and moments. It is still unbelievable to me, but I and my teams have been involved in hundreds of aerospace and space programs including missions to seven planets, the moon and the sun. I would have never imagined this to be possible when I was a student.

This has been a really challenging and tough two years for all of us, but particularly for our students. I wanted to find a way to pay what I have had the chance to experience forward while saying thanks to all those who participated in my lectures over the past three years.

Opening the door for everyone to AIAA and the future it creates is a small way for me to do my part to help bring us back to a place where we are looking forward positively again.

Faculty often speak highly of AIAA membership. How has being a member helped you?

Aerospace and space are sectors that is fundamentally built on being part of a team. Almost all successful programs are built on substantial collaboration, people’s past experience and preexisting science or technology. My time with AIAA has made me a better technologist and leader.

Building new and lasting personal relationships which have originated at the many AIAA meetings and sessions that I have attended, has allowed me to create strong industry level networks. It has also facilitated my being able to hire really talented people while helping me understand that I was not alone in facing the challenges that I was facing.

AIAA has also opened up access to invaluable research data and allowed me to have a voice in shaping the rules of engagement that we all operate under in aerospace. Sometime, and often most importantly, it just creates a place to have fun and realize how great it is to be part of such an amazing industry.

While there is no way to minimize this time, in this seminar, led by Mark Sirangelo, Entrepreneur-Scholar-in-Residence and former head of Sierra Nevada Space Systems, we will try to put it in perspective, discuss previous challenges and provide insight into the very important questions we are hearing from you.

Guest Speakers will include:

Maj. Gen. Kimberly A. Crider is the Mobilization Assistant to the Chief of Space Operations, Headquarters United States Space Force, the Pentagon, Arlington, Virginia. In this position, she assists the CSO to organize, train, equip and maintain space forces by contributing to the development of strategy, long-range plans, and concept of operations, as well as the activities ensuring the service builds and employs effective space forces.
Robert D. Strain is the president of Ball Aerospace. Strain joined Ball in 2012 following his tenure as the center director of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center where he oversaw the success of more than 13 missions. This included the final Shuttle servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope and the successful restructure of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

Full Abstract:

This has been a year that no one will forget. It has taken its toll on you and all in our CU family. On top of the many questions you would normally have at this point in your education, so many more questions, concerns, anxieties and fears have been added. Times like this are painful but we can learn from yesterday, live and stay safe for today while planning with a new hope for tomorrow.

While we cannot reverse the harsh impact of this pandemic, we can try to put it in perspective. Our university, our country and our world have dealt with, survived, and emerged stronger from challenges that have confronted us in similar ways.

This discussion is not meant to diminish what you are going through, nor can anyone yet provide definitive solutions. Rather, this conversation might help put these difficult events into a broader context and offer some balance and, perhaps, even hope. Difficult times can lead to opportunity and growth. We will discuss how our country has exited similar challenges previously, and use those lessons to provide insights into some of the important questions we have heard from you.

Will there be jobs for us when we graduate?
What will employers think of our education, given our different educational process?
Is the world of science, business and research ever going to be what it used to be?
This pandemic has challenged certain sectors of society more; how can this be addressed?
My education experience hasn’t been what I hoped for. How might that affect me in 5 or 10 years?
Is what I’m learning going to be relevant anymore?

As hard as it may be to see now, real sustainable positives can come from confronting the types of national and global issues that we are facing today. Often, after our darkest days, we have seen some of the most productive, expansive and dynamic times this country has ever enjoyed. That is true now as well.

Many positives are happening. These developments can create a constructive environment for you, for your career and for your future. We will try to present some of these encouraging trends, which might provide you optimistic thoughts for tomorrow despite what we all may be feeling at the moment.

What types of new directions and new opportunities might arise in our society from this time?
What have we learned from this that will actually improve our possibilities in the future?
Are there new areas or sectors that might be accelerated or created through this pandemic?
How might our generation at CU right now, actually make a bigger difference in the future?
What other types of professions or sectors can be pursued with the skills we are learning?

The U.S. Space Force (USSF) is a new branch of the U.S. Armed Forces. It was established on December 20, 2019 and will be stood-up over the next 18 months. The USSF was established within the Department of the Air Force, meaning the Secretary of the Air Force has overall responsibility for the USSF, under the guidance and direction of the Secretary of Defense. Additionally, a four-star general known as the Chief of Space Operations (CSO) serves as the senior military member of the USSF. The USSF was created to be a military service that organizes, trains, and equips space forces in order to protect U.S. and allied interests in space and to provide space capabilities to our country. The USSF’s primary responsibilities include developing military space professionals, acquiring military space systems, maturing the military doctrine for space power, and organizing the U.S. space forces within the DoD.

It will also work with other parts of the U.S. Government, as announced on September 22, 2020, with a new memorandum of understanding signed by NASA and U.S. Space Force. The agreement commits the two organizations to broad collaboration in areas including human spaceflight, U.S. space policy, space transportation, standards and best practices for safe operations in space, scientific research, and planetary defense.

Over the past year the Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Board (DIB) of which Mark Sirangelo is the Chairman, has been tasked by the Secretary of Defense with standing up a dedicated external Space Advisory Committee to assist in supporting the Department’s expanding space role. Space is affecting every corner of the DoD and transforming the character of Department as well as the world we live in. Maintaining a competitive advantage in all aspects in the future of space is therefore essential to our national security, prosperity and stability.

This two part lecture will summarize the reasons and history behind the creation of the Space Force, its current status and mission and its expected future direction, strategies and aspirations.

Part One of the lecture will cover the history, politics and national interest present in the creation and establishment of the Space Force, its agreed upon mission as well as its structure, organization, staffing and guiding principles as a new part of the Defense Department.
Part Two of the lecture will discuss the initial Space Force’s strategies and doctrines. This will include what is the space domain, what it means to have national spacepower, what might the Space Force’s future role be leading our spacepower development and what might be the employment of the U.S. space forces and how might the military space forces be incorporated into our national strategy.

Biography: Mark N. Sirangelo is currently the Entrepreneur Scholar in Residence at the University of Colorado. Mark serves as the Chairman of the U.S. Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Board providing future innovation advice to the office of the Secretary of Defense and as the Chair of the DoD’s Space Advisory Committee. Previously he completed an assignment as Special Assistant to the NASA Administrator helping to develop NASA’s Moon to Mars plans. Mark has spent his career building and leading aeronautics, space and technology companies and most recently was the head of Sierra Nevada Corporation’s Space Systems, one of the country’s top space technology companies which, under his leadership, participated in over 300 space missions.

He has served as the Chief Innovation Officer of the State of Colorado and currently is the State of Colorado’s appointee to the Colorado Energy Research Collaboratory. He is the founder and Chairman of eSpace, the Center for Space Entrepreneurship and a founder and Chairman Emeritus of the Commercial Spaceflight Federation.

Corporate and personal awards include NASA/Space Foundation’s Technology Hall of Fame, Fast Company Top 10 Most Innovative Space Companies, the Defense Industry’s Fast Track 50, Deloitte’s Fast Track 500, a finalist in Ernst &Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year and Inc. Magazine’s top 200 companies. Mark is an American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Associate Fellow, and holds Doctorate, MBA and Bachelor of Science degrees. He has also been scientifically published, served as an officer in the US Military and is a licensed pilot.
