Oral assessments: improved in grades and retention

We have all heard it said that, β€œYou really don’t understand something until you teach it.” We know that is because teaching forces us to clarify ideas and learn to explain them well. Research shows that mathematical discourse is a key to deep understanding. Oral assessments help students to articulate their understanding of basic concepts and help them to self assess. I will share the results of on research study that examined the effect of oral assessments and reform teaching on a class of at-risk Calculus I students.
