Following the recent article on the dispersive hydrodynamic formulation of magnetization dynamics in thin film ferromagnets, Ezio Iacocca and Mark Hoefer explore the effect of finite-sized obstacles in this context. Thin film ferromagnets support uniform hydrodynamic states (UHSs) that can be parametrized by a fluid density and velocity. UHSs share similar properties with superfluids but exhibit peculiar properties as well, such as broken Galilean invariance that make the physics reference-frame dependent. When UHSs flow past an impenetrable obstacle, regimes of laminar flow, quantized vortex shedding, and supersonic flow are established. By detailed micromagnetic simulations, these regimes were numerically confirmed both in the static and moving reference frames. Details can be found in the research article published in Physical Review B. This work was highlighted as editors’ suggestion.
