Museum of ��«��Ƶ’s new exhibit, Voces Vivas: Stories from the Latino Community in ��«��Ƶ County, Past and Present features Andrea Fautheree Márquez's thesis project, "Chicana Light," which explores the Chicano civil rights movement in Colorado. Fautheree Márquez, a Creative Industries master's student, used projection mapping to create the immersive, multimedia installation of three videos playing on their own loops.

Chicana Light also explores Fautheree Márquez's identity, political awakening and sense of pride as a Chicana woman.

Voces Vivas honors the early ��«��Ƶ County Latino/a/x/e families and their histories to date. The exhibit, which is in partnership with the Latino History Project and ��«��Ƶ's Ethnic Studies Department, builds upon the work local Latinos have been doing to preserve and share their stories.

Voces Vivas opened Feb 26 and runs through Feb 26, 2023. The exhibit was made possible with financial support from the ��«��Ƶ Arts Commission, the Community Foundation of ��«��Ƶ County, the Dodge Family Fund, Terrapin Care Station and the Horning Family.

In the accompanying video, Fiona Bell shares a class research project that explores bioplastics, including making bioplastic that changes color in ultraviolet light, concocting edible bioplastic packaging for ramen that has flavor impregnated and a variety of decorative applications. Conducted in the Living Matter Lab, directed by Mirela Alistar, Bell's work provides a refreshing exploration of sustainable alternatives to traditional plastics that are choking ecosystems around the planet, while illustrating the diverse interdisciplinary fields students are able to explore in the ATLAS Creative Technology and Design professional master's program.

In recognition of both her bioplastic research and academic achievements, Bell recently won two CU ��«��Ƶ awards totaling $5,000:

ATLAS Creative Technology and Design master's student Ruhan Yang and two teammates won first place for their project, e-Trombone, at Georgia Tech's (GT) annual Moog Hackathon, beating 11 teams, taking home $3,000, and securing a place in GT's prestigious Guthman Musical Instrument Competition.

Held Feb. 28 - March 1 at GT's School of Music in Atlanta, Moog's 48-hour competition is an invention marathon to design and build novel musical instruments using Moog platforms and other software and hardware prototyping tools.

The trio built e-Trombone with PVC pipes sprayed with glossy paint to simulate a metallic look and inserted wind sensors, allowing players to create brass-like sounds through different blowing techniques. The instrument is played like a conventional trombone and the addition of a Moog Werkstatt (a compact analog synthesizer) allows users to play sounds that would be impossible with traditional trombone parts.

"I still cannot believe it," said Yang, an active member of Ellen Do's ACME Lab in the ATLAS Institute, adding that the e-Trombone did not work until the final demo portion of the hackathon. "We overcame many disadvantages, including using limited tools, and worked till the last minute to make this happen."

Yang's winning team, which included Georgia Tech students Xiangyi Li and Jiewen Wang, was automatically entered in the Guthman Musical Instrument Competition, an event dedicated to identifying the "newest and greatest ideas in music," with 10 invited musical inventors from around the world sharing their creations and ideas about the future of music. During the 2020 competition, each finalist will be paired with a skilled musician from the Atlanta area. The musicians will learn the instruments and perform a demonstration concert.

Yang said she decided to make an electric brass instrument, then narrowed it down to a trombone after fellow CTD student John Williams loaned her his trombone and gave her some lessons. During the hackathon, Yang did the hardware design and machining, Wang designed the circuitry and handled the coding, and Li helped to build the circuits.

"Our goal was just to complete this cool project," Yang said.

At the Independent Games Festival in San Francisco, March 18–22, ATLAS graduate students Peter Gyory (left) and Clement Zheng were awarded the coveted alt.ctrl.GDC award for their game, Hot Swap. Reporting from the alt.ctrl.GDC showcase, Makezine's Donald Bell recorded this interview with Zheng and Gyory while covering this fun, offshoot of the Game Developers Conference, the world's largest annual gathering of professional game developers. Their award came with a $3,000 prize.
