Matt Bethancourt and Danny Rankin started the Whaaat!? festival in order to geek-out with a group of like-minded game developers; in just the second year, the all-day event attracted more than 250 participants.

The 2019 Whaaat!? festival is almost here, and like last year's inaugural event, it promises something for every game aficionado: weird new games, old dusty games, overlooked gems, games with bizarre controllers, games that

"Whaaat!? A festival for games and experimental interactions" featured a large number of experimental tabletop and electronic games, and a large vintage arcade featuring games from the 1970s and 80s. Central to the event was a series of talks and workshops on the art form of game design.

“It’s crazy that two ATLAS games are going to be there,” says Matt Bethancourt, “It shows we are doing really good work.”

ATLAS graduate student Danny Rankin, who graduated in May from the CTD track of the ATLAS master's program, launches a survivalist board game that exceeds promoter's Kickstarter goal by more than 2,000 percent.
