Through remarkable professional achievements and philanthropic contributions, Marvin Caruthers has created tremendous impact at CU ��«��Ƶ, in the local community and throughout society. A distinguished professor of biochemistry, he joined the faculty in 1973, first in the Department of Chemistry and continuing later when Biochemistry became a division and ultimately an independent department.

Caruthers played a critical role in this academic evolution, with his scientific credentials and collaborative spirit proving pivotal in recruiting other DNA and RNA scientists to CU ��«��Ƶ. Caruthers helped ignite the genomic revolution in biology and medicine by making critical advances in DNA synthesis. Without these advances, entire fields of research and classes of medicine would not exist today.

A generous, forward-thinking donor to CU ��«��Ƶ, Caruthers’ contributions include a transformative gift to support the construction of the world-class Jennie Smoly Caruthers Biotechnology Building, named in memory of Caruthers’ late wife, a former adjunct professor in CU ��«��Ƶ’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and researcher in the Molecular, Cellular & Developmental Biology department.

He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In 2006, he was awarded the National Medal of Science, the highest national honor bestowed on American scientists and engineers.

Dr. Marvin H. Caruthers of the University of Colorado, ��«��Ƶ, has won the inaugural Richard N. Merkin Prize in Biomedical Technology (https://merkinprize.org/) for developing an efficient, automated technology for synthesizing DNA. The chemical reactions that he discovered in the early 1980s to accurately and quickly assemble nucleotides into strands of DNA provided an essential element in the development of modern molecular medicine. Today, scientists use these reactions to produce customizable DNA and RNA molecules that enable genetic sequencing, drug and vaccine development, pathogen tests, cancer diagnostics, and many aspects of basic biomedical research. “I am honored to acknowledge the incredible and transformative impact of Dr. Caruthers’ technology on human health over the last four decades,” said Dr. Richard Merkin, founder and CEO of Heritage Provider Network, one of the country’s largest physician founded and physician owned integrated healthcare systems. “He deserves our support and recognition. I hope this prize not only raises awareness of this work, but underscores and encourages others to realize the broader importance of developing new scientific technologies to transform healthcare.” The Merkin Prize, which recognizes novel technologies that have improved human health, carries a $400,000 cash award. The prize was created by the Merkin Family Foundation and is administered by the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. Dr. Caruthers will be honored in a prize ceremony held this fall.

The National Academy of Inventors (NAI) named two CU ��«��Ƶ faculty members to its class of fellows for 2017. Distinguished Professor Marvin Caruthers of CU ��«��Ƶ’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry was honored for his pioneering contributions to the chemical synthesis of DNA and RNA, making it possible to decode and encode genes and genomes.
