The American Institute for Indonesian Studies (AIFIS), in collaboration with Michigan State University (MSU) Asian Studies Center, will hold the 5th annual AIFIS-MSU Conference on Indonesian Studies from June 17 - 21, 2025.

The Conference continues to highlight and celebrate the growing and evolving academic study of Indonesia, and aims to expand research dissemination and collaboration by connecting Indonesian scholars with international colleagues in a bilingual and virtual format. We welcome diverse communities of scholars, practitioners, policy makers, creators and artists, and look forward to hosting a virtual gathering that will attract broad participation worldwide.

“Indonesia in Motion: Aspirations and Apprehensions”

This year’s conference explores the theme “Indonesia in Motion: Aspirations and Apprehensions” to examine the intersections of precarity, resilience, and transformation in Indonesia and beyond. Building from last year’s focus on Indonesia’s global ascendance, our theme this year highlights uncertainties prompted by emerging trends in all aspects of life in Indonesia, past, present, and future. The conference considers the shared hopes and anxieties shaping the experiences of Indonesian and global communities.

Proposals for panels and presentations engaging with this theme or on any other theme focusing on Indonesia and its place in the world are welcomed. Abstracts are accepted in Indonesian and English.

Call for Abstracts

The program committee invites abstract submissions from scholars across broad disciplinary perspectives in the study of Indonesia. While abstracts on any topic focusing on Indonesia are welcome, the committee is especially interested in research that engages discourses on the trajectory of Indonesia, past and present, and broadly defined.

The "United States-Japan Foundation Scholar" Dissertation Award is a new annual competition recognizing the best social sciences doctoral dissertation on Japan produced in the U.S.

A committee of distinguished Japan specialists will review dissertations from U.S.-based research universities. The Award committee defines social sciences broadly to include anthropology, economics, history, political science, psychology, sociology, and related fields such as demography, finance, and global/regional studies.

An honorarium of $2,500 will be awarded to the author who best uses Japanese sources and social science methods to provide fresh insights and innovative perspectives that have implications for Japan’s contemporary politics, economy, or social relations.

The recipient will be honored at a public event at the March 2026 annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies in Vancouver.

The committee will review doctoral dissertations accepted between January 1, 2024 and June 13, 2025, and submitted by the PhD recipient’s department head or academic dean. The submission deadline is June 15, 2025. The winner will be announced by Sept. 2, 2025.

Nominations should be emailed to the USJF at scholars@us-jf.org and include a cover letter from the nominating university dean or department head. Self-nominations will not be accepted. No more than two dissertations can be submitted by a single academic department.

AIIS Digital Scholarship Grants
Deadline: January 31, 2025

The American Institute of Indian Studies is pleased to invite proposals for its Digital India Learning (DIL) initiative that demonstrate a sustained use of digital methodology and resources in the exploration of a research topic focused on India.

AIIS welcomes projects at all stages of development, including pilots at a preliminary stage of conception that: foster the digital production and dissemination of knowledge about India; promote the creation and use of digital resources and media for the study of India; promote digital collaboration across disciplines including, and especially, between the humanities, social sciences, and STEM fields.

Project Details
A proposal for a project can be submitted by one principal investigator applicant or a team of two or more principal investigators in collaboration.
Sources providing funding for the program require that fellows be present in India during their fellowship period.
Award funds can be used to supplement current projects supported by other grants, but the budget should clearly explain what portion of the project will be supported by the AIIS award.
Award funds may not be used exclusively for hosting a conference or workshop.
Deliverables may include but are not limited to digital material and publications, reports, teaching resources, online exhibits, digital infrastructure, and software.
An open-access scholarly article that demonstrates a sustained use of digital methods and resources may be an outcome but cannot be a sole deliverable.
Funding
AIIS is offering at least two grants, each for up to $15,000.

Eligibility
Eligible applicants include faculty, as well as non-faculty professionals at institutions of higher education in the United States. Applicants from community colleges, Minority Serving Institutions, and institutions which do not have established South Asian studies programs are especially encouraged to apply.

Decisions will be made by March 1, 2025. Those selected will be able to carry out their projects on a schedule of their choosing from May 1, 2025 to April 30, 2026.

The Center for Humanities & the Arts celebrates CU ��«��Ƶ faculty by featuring their artistic works and publications in the CHA's annual Faculty Celebration of Major Works Magazine.
If you are a CU ��«��Ƶ faculty member and have published/produced/exhibited a major work in 2024, we encourage you to complete our form so we may highlight and illuminate your work.
Examples of major works: books, art exhibitions, films, musical compositions, etc. We request CU ��«��Ƶ faculty submit your entry by December 15, 2024.

The fall 2024 reception for graduating students and their guests will be held on Thursday, December 19, 2024. ISSS will provide light refreshments, photo opportunities, and a relaxing atmosphere to mingle with other international graduates. There is no required dress code, no RSVP is required.

When: Thursday, December 19, 2024 from 2 to 3:30 p.m.
- This is a ‘drop-in’ event, meaning you can visit any time between 2 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Where: J.D. Abrams Lounge, down the hall from the ISSS office

We look forward to hosting a lovely afternoon reception for our fall 2024 graduates!

Gold Cords for International Graduates

If you will graduate in fall 2024, you can pick up a gold cord to wear at commencement. The gold cord represents the international student population at the ��«��Ƶ.

Cords are available for pick-up November 1 through November 29 at the ISSS front desk. You must bring your Buff One card. Only one cord will be given per person.

A cord denotes achievement or involvement within the university, be it academic, sports, professional organization, or being a member of a particular campus group. The cord is worn over the shoulders (see image). Students wear their cords at graduation events and official commencement ceremonies.

We have extended the deadline for abstract submissions for the 27^th Cornell SEAP Graduate Student Conference to December 7!

We would like to ask for your assistance in circulating the attached the Call for Papers for the 27^th Cornell SEAP Graduate Student Conference, which has the theme “Mobility,” and which will take place March 7-9, 2025 at the Kahin Center in Ithaca, NY. Abstracts will be due November 30, 2024, and questions can be sent to the graduate committee organizers at seapgatty@cornell.edu. Abstracts may be submitted online. All current graduate students who wish to present research on Southeast Asia (in any discipline) are welcome to submit. Please forward as applicable!

We are also circulating a CFP on behalf of the consortium for Graduate Education and Training in Southeast Asian studies (GETSEA). This is open for all current faculty who wish to teach a GETSEA mini-course. These mini-courses are offered virtually and freely to graduate students around the world, on topics in Southeast Asian studies.
