Doing so gets you access to a curated playlist to accompany your book—a hypothetical new feature called Spotify Booktracks.</p><p>Dreamt up by five senior strategic communication students, the Booktracks team sought to find a new way to engage Gen Z users with audiobooks. After learning that as little as 36.6% of listeners in that age group completed audiobooks, they thought that creating personalized playlists—like film soundtracks—would make the experience more emotionally moving.</p><p>“A lot of us like movies, and since Spotify is so integrated, we thought, why not combine the two?” said Tim Pham (Stratcomm’23).</p><p>Their ad explained that the curated playlists would “accentuate the energy of the book.” But they also wanted to give users options, which is why they came up with the ability to toggle the book’s soundtrack on and off.</p><p>This project was born out of the Portfolio course, in which students are given multiple brand briefs throughout the year and are tasked with creating campaigns. By the end of the course, students have multiple examples of work to show future employers, especially in professional creative departments, said teaching associate professor Dan Ligon.</p><p>Spotify and eBay’s briefs, among others, came from organizations like <a href="https://www.oneclub.org/awards/" rel="nofollow">The One Club Young Ones</a> and <a href="https://www.dandad.org/" rel="nofollow">D&amp;AD New Bloods</a>, which host national and international advertising competitions, respectively.</p><p>At the national level, Booktracks won a merit award from the Young Ones. After graduating in the spring, the students submitted their projects to <a href="https://www.oneclub.org/awards/denver" rel="nofollow">Denver’s One Club</a> competition and were recognized at the 2023 award show. Spotify Booktracks won gold and best of show in the student category.</p><p>“It was really cool to be there with my teammates and the staff of CMCI who came out to support us,” said Daniel Girten (Stratcomm’23), who was part of the Booktracks team.</p><p>In addition to the Spotify campaign, Girten also worked on a brief for eBay that earned a silver award at the Denver competition. That project became known as Rebay and aimed to make online reselling more fun, accessible and personal, especially for Gen Z. Girten and his team leaned into the idea that belongings often have a sentimental element, and that the younger generation cares about sustainability.</p><p> </p><div class="align-left image_style-medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <div class="imageMediaStyle medium_750px_50_display_size_"> <img loading="lazy" src="/cmci/sites/default/files/styles/medium_750px_50_display_size_/public/article-image/ebay_templates-01.png?itok=Eb-4uBlw" width="750" height="971" alt="Rebay Ad"> </div> </div> “One of the things we thought eBay could benefit from was personalization—so that you know when you’re buying or selling something, it’s to and from a person just like you,” Girten said.<p>To accomplish this, team Rebay proposed pop-up stores, made of repurposed shipping containers, on college campuses. Customers could bring their clothes to be repaired, photographed and ultimately posted to the website for resale. After the pop-up’s time on campus ended, the shipping containers could either be removed or left behind to create new community spaces.</p><p>“Every winning advertising campaign needs a concept—an idea with an insight—and both of these campaigns demonstrate the real communicative power of a big idea,” Ligon said. “I’m so proud of these students, after all the work and effort they put in, to bring these concepts to life. It’s gratifying to see them celebrated outside of campus by the professional community.”</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div>Two teams of strategic communication students were honored for innovative campaigns at the Denver One Club award show this fall.</div> <h2> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--ucb-related-articles-block paragraph--view-mode--default"> <div>Off</div> </div> </h2> <div>Traditional</div> <div>0</div> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle large_image_style"> <img loading="lazy" src="/cmci/sites/default/files/styles/large_image_style/public/feature-title-image/banner.jpg?itok=AtSpfkco" width="1500" height="865" alt> </div> </div> <div>On</div> <div>White</div> Thu, 14 Dec 2023 20:26:03 +0000 Anonymous 6819 at /cmci For brands, when it comes to Pride month, you’re either in or you’re out /cmci/news/2023/06/07/pride-brands-research-young-skerski <span>For brands, when it comes to Pride month, you’re either in or you’re out</span> <span><span>Anonymous (not verified)</span></span> <span><time datetime="2023-06-07T14:52:54-06:00" title="Wednesday, June 7, 2023 - 14:52">Wed, 06/07/2023 - 14:52</time> </span> <div> <div class="imageMediaStyle focal_image_wide"> <img loading="lazy" src="/cmci/sites/default/files/styles/focal_image_wide/public/article-thumbnail/stavrialena-gontzou-68y-orxey_y-unsplash.jpeg?h=e5aec6c8&amp;itok=pkx8SeMu" width="1200" height="800" alt="a person holds a Pride flag against a blue sky"> </div> </div> <div role="contentinfo" class="container ucb-article-tags" itemprop="keywords"> <span class="visually-hidden">Tags:</span> <div class="ucb-article-tag-icon" aria-hidden="true"> <i class="fa-solid fa-tags"></i> </div> <a href="/cmci/taxonomy/term/134" hreflang="en">advertising public relations and media design</a> <a href="/cmci/taxonomy/term/71" hreflang="en">communication</a> <a href="/cmci/taxonomy/term/105" hreflang="en">faculty</a> <a href="/cmci/taxonomy/term/168" hreflang="en">featured</a> <a href="/cmci/taxonomy/term/51" hreflang="en">news</a> <a href="/cmci/taxonomy/term/140" hreflang="en">research</a> <a href="/cmci/taxonomy/term/331" hreflang="en">strategic communication</a> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content ucb-striped-content"> <div class="container"> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--article-content paragraph--view-mode--default 3"> <div class="ucb-article-row-subrow row"> <div class="ucb-article-text col-lg d-flex align-items-center" itemprop="articleBody"> <div><p><strong>By Joe Arney</strong></p><p>As president of «Ƶ-based Young Ideas, <a href="/cmci/people/advertising-public-relations-and-media-design/morgan-young" rel="nofollow">Morgan Young</a> has helped his share of major companies navigate crises and put out public relations fires.</p><div class="ucb-box ucb-box-title-hidden ucb-box-alignment-right ucb-box-style-fill ucb-box-theme-black"> <div class="ucb-box-inner"> <div class="ucb-box-title"></div> <div class="ucb-box-content"><p class="lead"><i class="fa-solid fa-quote-right ucb-icon-color-gold fa-3x fa-pull-right">&nbsp;</i> “Your brand has to be able to say, ‘We know we can’t make everybody happy, but we don’t have to sell to everybody.’”<br>- Morgan Young, teaching assistant professor<br><em>Advertising, Public Relations and Media Design</em></p></div> </div> </div><p>But Bud Light’s campaign with a social media influencer and the resulting outrage from a portion of its customer base—which emptied AR-15s at beer cans on social media—even has him scratching his head.</p><p>“I just don’t know what the thought process was,” said Young, a teaching assistant professor at CU «Ƶ’s College of Media, Communication and Information. “It came across as so inauthentic, especially when they attacked their own customers and said the campaign was a way to approach a new fan base. And then they alienated the LGBTQ community by backing away when their customers started shooting cans of beer.</p><p>“You know, I’m from San Francisco. It’s an urban center with a long progressive history on many issues, including LGBTQ&nbsp;issues, and I haven’t seen a lot of Bud Light in my time at any event I’ve ever attended. And Bud Light is not going to change that just because you put Dylan Mulvaney’s face on a can of light beer.”</p><p>Being authentic, Young and other CMCI experts said, means meaningful engagement with the LGBTQ community, a year-round commitment to supporting gay rights and understanding that a brand can’t please everyone.</p><p>“There’s more to this than whether your Twitter handle is a Pride flag,” said <a href="/cmci/people/communication/jamie-skerski" rel="nofollow">Jamie Skerski</a>, a teaching associate professor and director of the <a href="/lab/speaking/" rel="nofollow">Josephine Jones Speaking Lab</a>. “Being authentic in this space means evaluating your actual company practices—everything from promoting inclusive benefits to having gender-neutral bathrooms.”</p><p>If you’re just rainbow washing, “a savvy consumer will quickly smell out a marketing gimmick,” Young said—especially when those gimmicks don’t align with our own values, a challenge for communicators in the age of social media-created echo chambers.</p><h2>Consumers ‘have more power now’</h2><p>Brands, he said, no longer have the luxury of staying on the sidelines, especially when consumers have more power than ever to create controversy with a tweet.</p><p>“As consumers, we have more power now. Brands really need to adjust to that reality—and they have to stick by their values once they start getting hit from a segment that is not their customer. Your brand has to be able to say, ‘We know we can’t make everybody happy, but we don’t have to sell to everybody.’”</p><p>Both professors pointed to different brands—OpenTable, Saks Fifth Avenue, Nike, Old Navy, Pop Tarts, Skittles and others—that aren’t shy about messaging that chooses a side.</p><p>“For me, it comes down to a business decision that is about values, as opposed to being about one customer base or another,” Skerski said. “What it’s going to take is those brands saying, we’re not going to open any more stores in Florida, or we’re not going to have our tournaments in states that are taking reproductive rights away from women.”</p><p>During June, she said, OpenTable’s dining reservation app recommended nearby gay-owned restaurants, “which is what Pride month should be about—finding tangible ways to support the LGBTQ community, both politically and economically.”</p><p>Meanwhile, Young said, “when I was a kid, the bad guy was Nike,” a company whose leadership seemingly embraced child labor in developing countries to help it become a global sports brand. But most of its brand ambassadors are influential people of color, and when Colin Kaepernick took a knee during the national anthem, “they realized they couldn’t sit on the sidelines.”</p><p>That helped usher in its Dream Crazy campaign, supporting people of color and the LGBTQ community with athletes like Megan Rapinoe and Serena Williams. Its Kaepernick ad featured the athlete delivering the line “Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything.”</p><p>“They lost a certain audience, but they also found a very new audience,” he said. “And I think Nike was able to look at the arc of society, and say, this is where we think society is going. But most importantly, this is the kind of brand that we want to be.”</p></div> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content-media ucb-article-content-media-right col-lg"> <div> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--media paragraph--view-mode--default"> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div>Thought leaders say when brands try to please everyone, they vex everyone. Similarly, False Creative found that news literacy education is often lacking. Somewhat surprisingly, they also found that most of their survey respondents said they trusted Twitter and Instagram the most for news.</p><p>The teams were given a $300 budget–with the option of raising in-kind donations to help supplement their funds–for marketing tactics like giveaways and events for their campaigns, which ran from Feb. 6 through March 6.</p><p>Both groups primarily used social media to connect with their peers, and False Creative garnered media attention from a number of Colorado news publications, including the <em>Daily Camera</em>, <em>The Durango Herald</em>, <em>Aspen Times</em> and others.</p><p>“Our most successful marketing tactic so far has been our op-ed. I recently wrote an article on the ‘Importance of News Literacy’ directed toward rural communities,” said Cassidy Davis of False Creative. “We pitched it to over 70 newspapers across Colorado and have been/will be published by around 20.”</p><p>In addition to media-related outreach, the groups also used in-person components like tabling in the University Memorial Center, informational events and giveaways to encourage student engagement. Notably, The Daily He(a)rd organized a trivia night and a screening of an award-winning media documentary called <em>Trust Me</em>.</p><p>“Our most successful marketing tactics have been giveaways,” explained Bailey Ghashghai from The Daily He(a)rd. “We are trying to make things digestible and approachable for our audience and encourage participation. Doing this through incentives has definitely helped to attract more people.”</p><p>After the campaigns ended in early March, Bateman teams evaluated their experience into a summary report—considering research, objectives, tactics, etc.—which was sent to Bateman Competition judges. Teams who placed first through third, including The Daily He(a)rd, were invited to give a presentation and received a monetary award.</p><p>Doty noted that the competition is an invaluable experience for students because the communication and public relations industry they will enter after graduation is competitive.</p><p>“It is always exciting to see students create campaigns and have a real-world opportunity to test out how they actually work,” Doty said. “I think CMCI should be proud that we give students this opportunity in their senior capstone.”</p><p>In mid-April PRSSA announced the top three finalists: «Ƶ - The Daily He(a)rd, University of Florida (first place) and Louisiana State University (third place). Notably, CU's team is the first to represent not only the school, but also the state of Colorado. These three teams then presented their pitches to the Bateman judges Thursday, May 4, and the winners were announced in the early afternoon.&nbsp;</p><p>“The Daily He(a)rd is thrilled with our achievements throughout the Bateman competition,” said team member Erin Bauman. “Being the first team from the state of Colorado to make it to the finals was an honor in itself. Placing second in the nation was the cherry on top. Most of his position was remote, but he also spent time in the company’s Manhattan office, which allowed him to both network and get the sense of a possible future at a big firm.</p><p dir="ltr">Now he is set to graduate in spring 2023 with a degree in strategic communication focusing on advertising strategy. After being exposed to real-world marketing and advertising, Mendoza says his future feels more in focus: After graduation, he hopes to work in a large agency, ideally, in New York City.</p><p dir="ltr">“Working in a large setting like that, it tends to be a little bit harsh,” Mendoza said. “I want to be pushed above my comfort zone.”&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr"> </p><div class="ucb-box ucb-box-title-hidden ucb-box-alignment-right ucb-box-style-fill ucb-box-theme-white"> <div class="ucb-box-inner"> <div class="ucb-box-title"></div> <div class="ucb-box-content"><p class="lead" dir="ltr"><i class="fa-solid fa-quote-right ucb-icon-color-gold fa-3x fa-pull-right">&nbsp;</i> “I love how the [CMCI] curriculum is structured. His first semester, he took an introductory class in the Department of Advertising, Public Relations and Media Design. By the next semester, he <a href="/cmci/node/1778" rel="nofollow">transferred out of an open option program within the College of Arts and Sciences and into CMCI</a>.</p><p dir="ltr">“I identified with being able to be creative in a professional environment,” he said. “I also like the idea of . . . maintaining and building relationships and thinking of things like strategy and copy.”</p><p dir="ltr">Mendoza said that he liked the feeling of knowing his peers and his professors; and that the support from his professors and advisors was extremely helpful and valuable.</p><p dir="ltr">“I like the idea of being in a smaller college with a smaller major. . . . You’re able to be creative through media production, through strategy, whatever it may be,” he said.</p><p dir="ltr">In his advertising classes, Mendoza learned how UM Worldwide “shaped the advertising industry.” So when it came time to search for internships, he immediately honed in on one with the company. He reached out to some of his ARPD professors, who helped guide him throughout the interview process.</p><p dir="ltr">Then during summer 2022, Mendoza worked both remotely and in New York City for UM Worldwide as a digital media resident.</p><p dir="ltr">“What I loved so much about it was the culture,” Mendoza said. “Support was offered to me the whole time and they truly cared about teaching me.”</p><p dir="ltr">In one major project, he created slide decks analyzing performance statistics for the New York Lottery. His data analysis—of sales, clicks and views—were sent to lottery representatives to evaluate the success of their marketing campaigns from that year.&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">UM also had Mendoza and the other program participants compete in teams to create a hypothetical pitch for IHOP. His team came up with an interactive campaign called #TheIHOPExperience to appeal to college students. This theoretical plan included food trucks and merchandise giveaways, and some marketing mockups were shared with IHOP’s communication team.&nbsp;</p><p dir="ltr">Mendoza felt as though he had a leg up compared to some of his other colleagues—he had already learned about writing briefs and using various research methods in his APRD classes. Those introductory courses initially give students a wide overview of strategic communication and marketing, and with time, become more niche, according to students’ preferred areas of study.</p><p dir="ltr">“I love how the [CMCI] curriculum is structured,” Mendoza said. “I got to take my knowledge and background and actually see it and do it . . . and I took a part of CU [to New York].”</p></div> </div> <div class="ucb-article-content-media ucb-article-content-media-right col-lg"> <div> <div class="paragraph paragraph--type--media paragraph--view-mode--default"> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div>When Matthew Mendoza first enrolled at CU «Ƶ, he didn’t expect to work alongside marketing giants.
