When Matt Anderson stands behind the family's kitchen table and makes a speech a president might deliver to the American people, his intention is to help his daughter with her class project. Instead, his presentation captivates the nation and elicits calls for him to enter the on-going campaign. Replete with warmth, humor, and unexpected moments of high drama, the story traces the formation of an advisory 'Dream Team' whose "outside the box" campaign innovations and dynamic ideas seek to overcome the new party's late start and underfunding. Isabel Bond became director in the early 1970s and led the program there for more than three decades. Those who enrolled in the experimental initiative--part of Lyndon B. Johnson's War on Poverty--were required to live within a 200-mile radius and be the first in their family to pursue a college degree. Living on the University of Idaho campus each summer, they received six weeks of intensive instruction.</p><p>Recognizing that most participants came from nearby Nez Perce and Coeur d'Alene communities, Bond and her teachers designed a curriculum that celebrated and incorporated their Native American heritage--one that offers insights for educators today. Many of the young people they taught overcame significant personal and academic challenges to earn college degrees. Native students broke cycles of poverty, isolation, and disenfranchisement that arose from a legacy of colonial conquest, and non-Indians gained a new respect for Idaho's first peoples. Today, Upward Bounders serve as teachers, community leaders, entrepreneurs, and social workers, bringing positive change to future generations.</p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div>Based on more than thirty interviews with students and staff,&nbsp;Teaching Native Pride&nbsp;employs both Native and non-Native voices to tell the story of the University of Idaho's Upward Bound program. This comprehensive and engaging narrative explores the Civil War ordeals and triumphs of the “Lead Mine men” who hailed from eleven counties in northern Illinois. Thomas B. Mack uncovers the history on this unit of resilient midwesterners and how they brought hard-war to the Confederacy in 1862, earlier than other historians have previously suggested.&nbsp;</span><br><br><span>During their service the regiment compiled an exceptional record. The 45th fought under General Ulysses S. Grant in the war’s western theater, earning honors at Vicksburg and in Tennessee. The men later reenlisted as veterans and served in General William T. Sherman’s Atlanta, Savannah, and Carolina campaigns. Mack considers the soldiers’ community, discipline, and faith in Providence during their service in the Union Army of the Tennessee and how, despite the unit’s high casualties, they upheld the lowest rate of desertion due to their fervent patriotism.</span><br><br><span>Throughout The Lead Mine Men, Mack’s focus remains on the soldiers—their extensive training in Galena and Chicago and their time in camp and in combat. He follows their experiences from recruitment to their celebratory march in the 1865 Grand Review to their postwar lives in which many struggled to adjust, receive their government pensions, and protect the unit’s legacy. In this book, Mack broadens our understanding of the Union soldiers who saved their republic and ended slavery within its borders.&nbsp;</span></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div>To destroy Confederate infrastructure, avenge the horrors of slavery, and shorten the war, the 45th Illinois Volunteer Infantry imposed the pillaging of hard-war philosophy upon Confederate lands. This book contextualizes the geographical, political, religious, cultural, and musical aspects of the life of John Dowland (1563-1626). It provides a window into life as a musician in the Elizabethan-Jacobean era, illuminating the importance of social, courtly, and academic connections as it closely explores the composer's musical compositions. During his lifetime, Dowland was well-known for his prowess as a performing lutenist who established a reputation not only in England, but also in the German and Italian lands, Denmark, and beyond. His lute solos and duos survive in manuscripts collected across Europe. He also issued four books of lute song-ayres, including the most successful secular music anthology of the era, one collection of consort music, and a theoretical translation, all printed in London. In these publications, Dowland utilized innovative print formats and set new standards for contemporary genres. Collectively, Dowland's compositions and writings present the self-styled image of a man always seeking more. This book places these activities within a biographical timeline of ongoing artistic, commercial, and reputational pursuits. As a complete record, Dowland captures the entrepreneurial resourcefulness of the foremost musician of his day, a performing composer who understood expected conventions, seized opportunities, and created a musical legacy that still stands firm 400 years after his death.</span></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div>Dowland celebrates the story of one of the most important composers to emerge from early modern England.
