Shaping Pride with Youth
The mind. body. voice. (m.b.v) LGBTQ+ program (Shaping Pride with Youth; SPY) is an adaptation of m.b.v. that centers the unique experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and gender queer youth. This affinity group aims to offer a safe space for LGBTQ+ students to reflect on their lived experiences with appearance pressures and explore how appearance biases impact their mental health both outside of and within the queer community. Members of the m.b.v. team worked with a team of LGBTQ+ youth to co-design a culturally responsive curriculum. Out team is currently running the program in Colorado to assess satisfaction and effectiveness of the new curriculum.
Current research studies
Sign up to be in a positive body image research study with other LGBTQ+ youth! Our research study (Promoting body image satisfaction and preventing disordered eating with LGBTQ+ youth: Study 2; IRB 24-0191) is based out of the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s Renée Crown Wellness Institute. The purpose of the study is to assess feasibility and satisfaction with a positive body image program specifically for LGBTQ+ youth.
You may participate in this study if you are:
Age 13-18
Identify as LGBTQ+
Live in Colorado
If you participate, you will be asked to:
Experience a positive body image program that includes four weekly 2.5-hour meetings, for a total of 10 program hours. Meetings will include up to 12 LGBTQ+ youth. Curriculum topics include awareness and challenging of societal appearance ideals, bodily grounding activities, and both personal and community activism.
Complete a total of four online surveys about LGBTQ+ minority stress, sense of belonging, internalization of societal appearance ideals, body image satisfaction, disordered eating, depression, and anxiety. The surveys will take approximately 50-60 minutes each. We will pay you with your choice of electronic gift card (Amazon, Target, or Starbucks). Below is the survey schedule:
First survey – baseline/immediately after study enrollment. You are paid $25
Second survey – one week before the program. You are paid $35
Third survey – immediately after program completion (post-program.) You are paid $40
Fourth survey – Three months after program completion. You are paid $50
Participants will be in this research study for approximately 3 to 5 months following enrollment. We cannot promise any benefits from taking part in this research; however, possible benefits include: learning about body image satisfaction and disordered eating, personal satisfaction from making a contribution to research, and informing the creation of programs to support LGBTQ+ youth.
There will be options to attend meetings in either ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, CO or Denver, CO. Please visit our interest form to learn about meeting time and location options!
