Archaeological research in the alpine areas ofÌýthe northern RockiesÌýhas revealed thatÌýhigh mountain snow andÌýice patches were important to Native Americans for thousands of years.ÌýTheseÌýunique environmental settingsÌýareÌýa source of culturally important animals and plants as well asÌýsettings for important ceremonies and spiritual practices. Many of the ice patches we see today appear to have formedÌýwithin the last 5,000 years or so, but the truly ancient artifacts emerging from some ice patches indicate that a few are much older...
