Leah Powers is in her fourth year of the Ph.D. program in the French and Italian department. She holds an M.A. from the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and previously spent time studying in Aix-en-Provence and teaching in Bordeaux. Her current research interrogates the changing relationships between and concepts of the human and the nonhuman world in nineteenth-century French literature and painting. More specifically, by engaging with contemporary philosophy and ethology, namely the work of Vinciane Despret, Jocelyne Porcher, and Donna Haraway along with analyzing archival documents, she investigates work with animals as a space for collaboration and reciprocity in a variety of novels and paintings of this time.
