Graduate Linguistics Association

The GLA is a space where all graduate students at the department (PhD, MA, MS and BAM) can come together. The student interest group consists of the GLA chair and representatives from each of the four programs. Along with this group, the GLA also works with the Graduate Lead Teacher, CRIL Editor, and LingCircle organizer.

  1. What is the student interest group?

The student Interest group is made up of elected representatives from the four graduate programs: PhD, MA, MS, and BAM. These students act as liaisons between the faculty and the graduate community. Their responsibilities include attending faculty meetings, convey issues or suggestions from the graduate community to the faculty, attend GLA meetings to better understand how to support the students in the department, and assist other officers (Lead TA, CRIL editor, LingCircle organizer) as and when required.

The GLA chair is responsible for organizing the meetings and handling any communication that is addressed to the GLA.

  2. How often do they meet?

The GLA meets biweekly (every other week). These meetings are an avenue for all graduate students to come together and share their ideas with the representatives. The representatives in turn use this opportunity to get input from the community or share information that is of interest to everyone (e.g. changes to program structure, etc.)

  3. When are they elected?

The GLA chair is elected in January of every year and serves a term until December. The program representatives and LingCircle organizer are elected in August and serve a term until May of the following year.

  4. Who attends the meetings?

Every graduate student is encouraged to attend the GLA meetings. These can also serve the purpose of fostering the community and meeting students from other subfields or programs.
