We鈥檙e thrilled to welcome Juniper Winds as our current Graduate Woodwind Quintet in Residence! Members of the quintet serve as teaching assistants and mentors for our flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and horn studios. The ensemble鈥攃omprising flutist Lauren Flaten, oboist Sophie Maeda, clarinetist Yi Dong, bassoonist J.T. Holdbrooks and hornist Derrick Rassinier鈥攁lso performs two recitals each year, as well as community outreach programming.听

Due to fall break, this newsletter will resume on Dec. 1.

• Congratulations to our Eklund Opera Program for placing second in the very competitive National Opera Association鈥檚 Opera Production Competition with its production of 鈥淟a Traviata鈥澨�(2021)!听Let鈥檚 hear it for Leigh Holman, stage director; Nicholas Carthy, conductor; Peter Dean Beck, scenic + lighting designer; and Ann Piano, costume designer!
• Grad student spotlight: meet Julia Sills!听鈥淚 believe music that is relevant to modern popular culture should have a space in academic literature,鈥� she says.
• Huge congratulations to L铆rios Quartet cellist Chas Barnard (MM 鈥�20)鈥攐riginally from Dayton, Ohio鈥攚ho was selected by audition with London Symphony Orchestra musicians during a Music Academy Summer Festival to train and perform with the LSO for 10 days this month! 鈥淗aving grown up hearing the LSO in recordings and movies, it鈥檚 truly a dream come true to perform in these concerts as part of the Keston MAX residency,鈥� shares Barnard.听
• Congratulations as well to Zane Cupec, a College of Music PhD candidate in ethnomusicology whose research paper鈥斺�淚ndexing Yor霉b谩 Authenticity: The Legacy of L谩zaro 鈥楨l Maestro鈥� Galarraga鈥濃�攚as awarded the SEM African and African Diasporic Music Section student paper prize!
