CUPD responds to burglary in progress

Around 9:00 a.m. onÌýSaturday, Aug. 11, 2018, CU ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Police officersÌýresponded to Sewall Hall on the report of a burglary. When officers arrived, they found a man, matching the description of the suspect sitting outside of the building. This person, Ryan Alfred Johnson (DOB 12/14/1978), is alleged to haveÌýbroken into the building, set a small fire, and caused damageÌýto a fire sprinkler head.Ìý

While speaking with him, JohnsonÌýstarted to walk away from officers. He did not comply with officer'sÌýdirections to remain at the scene and resisted officers when they attempted to detain him. At one point,Ìýone of the officers used their conducted electrical device (commonly known as a TASER) to prevent injury to themselves and control the suspect.

A short time later, Johnson then began to have an unknown medical issue. He was transported to ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Community Hospital by American Medical Response (AMR). Drugs and alcohol are thought to have been involved. Johnson was arrested after being released from the hospital and booked into the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ County Jail.

Damage to Sewall Hall is estimated to be around $20,000. The damage did not involve any of the student living areas.
