We sent this email on Monday, May 16, 2022, to students who:

Earned a qualifying low grade in an eligible course taken previously, retook that course in Spring 2022 and were eligible for grade replacement.

Dear [first],

We've applied grade replacement to the following Spring 2022 class(es):

Effective Spring 2022, grade replacement is applied automatically at the end of each semester when a student repeats an eligible course. There is no longer a limit to the number of credit hours students can use for grade replacement. However, some academic programs have limits on the number of course repeats allowed for specific courses or number of attempts for degree applicability.

If a repeated course doesn't appear on the list above, that means it did not meet all of the grade replacement eglibility requirements.

Note: Grade replacement may be revoked by action of the Office of Student Conduct if an honor code violation is found to have occurred.

Your Transcript & GPA

Under grade replacement, the grade you earned in your most recent prior attempt will still appear on your transcript, but it will be replaced in your cumulative GPA and credit totals by the grade from your latest attempt as long as that grade is the same or better.

Opting Out of Grade Replacement

You can repeat a course without grade replacement by submitting an opt-out request. Opting out of grade replacement is irreversible. Please meet with your advisor to discuss how opting out of grade replacement will impact your GPA and academic standing.
If you determine that opting out of grade replacement is the best option for you, submit a request from your Colorado email to registrar@colorado.edu.

"Grade Replacement Policy Update" Student Announcement

Grade replacement enables undergraduate and graduate students to retake a course in which they earned a low grade* in an attempt to improve their cumulative GPAs.

Beginning with the Spring 2022 semester, if a student is retaking an eligible course in which they’ve earned a low grade, grade replacement will be applied automatically. Students no longer need to submit the grade replacement request form by the deadline.

If a student is retaking a course but does not want grade replacement applied, they may opt out by emailing registrar@colorado.edu by the last day of classes of the semester.

Other changes:

There are no longer credit limits on grade replacement.
Nondegree students enrolled in credit-bearing CU ��«��Ƶ courses are now also eligible for grade replacement. (Law students are still not eligible.)

*Eligible grades include C- and below for undergraduate and nondegree students; C+ and below for graduate and graduate nondegree students. Grades earned due to academic dishonesty aren't eligible for grade replacement.

This announcement was included in CU ��«��Ƶ Today on Thursday, Feb. 17 in both the student edition and faculty/staff edition.

What is grade replacement?

If you previously earned a low grade (C- or lower for undergrads, C+ or lower for grad students) in an eligible course, you may repeat that course in a later semester in an attempt to improve your GPA.

The grade earned in the most recent prior attempt will still appear on your transcript, but it will be replaced in your cumulative GPA and credit totals with the grade earned in the current attempt. Grade replacement will be processed at the end of the semester, after final grades are posted.

Grades earned due to academic dishonesty aren’t eligible for grade replacement.

What’s new?

The grade replacement policy is currently under review. To minimize any potential impacts to Spring 2022 record processing, we're waiting to accept grade replacement requests for spring until policy review is complete.

We've added a notice to our grade replacement webpage notifying students that the form is not yet available, and we'll share updates here as we have them.

Course reservation for Spring 2022 runs from Oct. 25 through 29. To reserve a seat in their previously waitlisted class, eligible students must submit a course reservation form by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29, and ensure they have no holds.
