M.A. candidate Krissy Peterson organized a successful panel on religious diversity at CU's Diversity and Inclusion Summit on November 15, 2012. The panel included students from a variety of religious perspectives, who discussed their experiences on campus. The event was well attended by students, faculty and staff.

The Department of Religious Studies will be hosting Omid Safi, a leading Muslim-American scholar, media figure, and public commentator on Islam and Muslims in the United States. He is the author of the influential books, Memories of Muhammad: Why the Prophet Matters and Progressive Muslims: On Justice, Gender and Pluralism. On November 5th, he will be presenting: "America and Islam: Rising Beyond the Politics of Fear Post 9/11".

Manuel Vasquez will present the 2012 Lester Lecture on October 4 at 6:30 p.m. in Hale 230. The title for his talk is "The Materialist Turn in Religious Studies: Promises, Challenges, and Pitfalls." Vasquez is Professor and Chair of the Department of Religion at the University of Florida. Vasquez has written widely on topics of contemporary relevance, including immigration and theory of religion. His recent publications include, More than Belief: A Materialist Theory of Religion (Oxford, 2011) and The Brazilian Popular Church and the Crisis of Modernity (Cambridge, 1998). He also co-authored Living ‘Illegal’: The Human Face of Unauthorized Immigration (New Press, 2011) and Globalizing the Sacred: Religion across the Americas (Rutgers, 2003). Moreover, he has published a number of co-edited volumes, including A Place to Be: Brazilian, Guatemalan, and Mexican Immigrants in Florida’s New Destinations (Rutgers, 2009), Latin American Religions: Histories and Documents in Context (NYU, 2008), and Immigrant Faiths: Transforming Religious Life in America. (AltaMira, 2005).

Religious Studies alumna Yolanda Chichester is currently involved in an art project, titled ¡Rediseñar los Campitos!, directed by the community and site based art collective, M12. The project opened on July 1st in front of the City and County Building of Denver at Civic Center Park. Today, July 8th, it is located in front of the Ellie Caulkin's Opera House on 14th St. from 12:30 to 5pm. Associate Professor Brian Catlos will speak at the Multicultural Mosaic Foundation on March 13 on "Islamic Spain and Modern Western Culture, or What Bill Gates and Bob Dylan Owe to Medieval Islam."

Hard as it may be to believe, if a small Muslim army had not conquered what was then the Visigothic Kingdom of Spain in 711 AD, what we call "Western culture" would not be what it is today. Find out what Bill Gates and Bob Dylan, not to mention the rest of us, owe to the culture of al-Andalus -- medieval Islamic Spain -- and how and why this is the case.

Visiting Professor Elaine Padilla will give a talk on: “Fluid Borders and Expansive Space: in Search of the Hospitable Sacred” on Monday, March 5, 2012 in Eaton Humanities 250 at 3:00 p.m.

Elaine Padilla is Assistant Professor of Constructive Theology at New York Theological Seminary. Dr. Padilla uses cross-disciplinary approaches, postcolonial and deconstructive theory to address issues of geographical borders and border-identities. She works on the historical aspects of Christian thought as well as contemporary issues of culture, gender and race in dialogue with feminist, Latino/a and Latin American thinkers.
