Ms. Capeci is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders/School of Applied Health Sciences at Jacksonville University, Jacksonville, FL. She provides clinical education and supervision to graduate students in speech-language pathology. She is the admissions coordinator, continuing education administrator, and ASL Club advisor for the department. She also serves as the Vice President for Educational Services for the Florida Speech-Language Hearing Association (FLASHA). This presentation is applicable to those who have an interest in clinical education/supervision of graduate students in Communication Sciences and Disorders, with a focus on speech-language pathology (SLP) clinical education.

Exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO)

is a pattern of glottic and/or supraglottic closure that restricts an individual’s ability to breathe comfortably in response to exercise. Speech-language pathologists use various treatment approaches such as respiratory retraining and relaxation techniques to guide patients through symptom control and prevention. In this lecture, SLPs that specialize in the treatment of this condition will discuss treatment approaches as well as the future direction of research and treatment.

Researchers from the University of Colorado were among the first to document the positive effects of early identification and intervention for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, which led to the establishment of universal newborn hearing screening and Early Hearing Detection and Intervention programs around the world. Developmental outcomes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing have never been better as a result. However, children who are deaf or hard of hearing continue to experience considerable individual variability in their auditory and language outcomes even with early intervention and amplification. Our research team followed a large cohort of children who are hard of hearing from infancy through early primary school to evaluate the factors that supported developmental risk and resilience in communication development. This presentation will highlight novel theoretical and clinical insights from our work that we hope can support further improvements in intervention and outcomes for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Ryan McCreery is Director of Research at Boys Town National Research Hospital where he is also Director of the Audibility, Perception and Cognition Laboratory and Director of the Center for Audiology. Dr. McCreery completed his Ph.D. in 2011 at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, where he researched bottom-up and top-down processing of auditory information in children. His lab’s current research is focused on various aspects of hearing, hearing amplification, language processing and language development. Dr. McCreery’s research has contributed to our understanding of the importance of cumulative auditory experience on language and sensory development. Findings from Dr. McCreery’s research are directly related to clinical outcomes and have led to optimized clinical protocols for fitting hearing aids in kids with hearing loss.

Dr. McCreery has authored 56 peer reviewed publications and has numerous research collaborations. He is a regular speaker at scientific and clinical meetings and is an active member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

Because of his significant scientific and professional contributions, Dr. McCreery was recognized in 2020 with a prestigious ASHA Fellowship.

Previous studies have identified greater than expected rates of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among children with reduced hearing. Utilizing a large, publicly available online database (Audiological and Genetic Database; AudGenDB) containing audiological and medical health record data for patients receiving audiological care at three large medical centers in the United States, this study built upon previous studies exploring the prevalence of ASD among children with hearing loss and provided detailed analyses of population characteristics. Four distinct groups were compared: 1) children with permanent hearing loss with ASD; 2) children with permanent hearing loss without ASD; 3) children seen in pediatric audiology clinics with neither ASD nor hearing loss; 4) children with ASD with hearing within typical limits. Comparison within the same pediatric population reveals diagnostic complexity and concerns for disparities in audiological management of hearing loss among children with ASD. Findings have important implications for improving clinical care for children with ASD.

Dr. Angela Yarnell Bonino is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences at the ��«��Ƶ. She completed her clinical training in audiology at Vanderbilt University, and her Ph.D. and postdoctoral training at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her work has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Academy of Audiology Foundation, and the Hearing Health Foundation.

Narratives have a central place in the lives of humans. Most of the research on narratives has focused on the structure, content, and style of fictional narratives. Comprehension and production of fictional narratives predicts academic performance through the school year. Much less attention has been given to personal narratives, yet we use personal narratives in many more contexts than fictional stories. Most conversations with others involve sharing personal stories. It is through sharing of personal stories that we establish and maintain social relationships. And it is through telling of coherent personal stories that we develop a cultural self-identity that guides our behavior and is essential for psychological well-being. We tell ourselves stories and we live by the stories we tell ourselves.

The presenter of this sessions will explain why personal narratives are a critical aspect of development, describe influences of culture on personal narratives, describe the relationship between autobiographic memory and personal narratives, and describe strategies to promote telling of detailed, coherent personal narratives.

Carol Westby, CCC-SLP, PhD, BCS-CL, is an internationally renowned expert on play assessment and development. She has published and presented nationally and internationally on play, theory of mind, language-literacy relationships, narrative/expository development and facilitation, screen time, understanding and working with children and families who have experienced trauma, and issues in assessment and intervention with culturally/ linguistically diverse populations.

Dr. Westby is a consultant for Bilingual Multicultural Services in Albuquerque, NM and holds an affiliated appointment in Communication Disorders at Brigham Young University in Provo, UT. She is a fellow of the American-Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), has received the Honors of ASHA, and holds Specialty Recognition in Child Language. Dr. Westby has received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Geneva College and the University of Iowa's Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology and the ASHA Award for Contributions to Multicultural Affairs.
