Will Fleissig, a former ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ planning director, will speak on "Smart Growth: Practical Approaches to A More Livable ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ" as part of the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Chancellor's Business Community Lecture Series.

The talk, which is free and open to the public, will be in the main auditorium at the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Public Library at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4. Attendees are invited to have refreshments with Chancellor Richard L. Byyny at 7 p.m.

Fleissig is a senior associate at the Real Estate Center in the College of Business and Administration. He also is a partner of the Denver-based development company Continuum Partners.

Fleissig's presentation will synthesize the powerful forces that underly the sprawling development that has evolved over the past 50 years, and will suggest incremental actions that can accelerate key changes in how developers, neighborhood groups, lenders and city officials evaluate proposed projects.

Fleissig will use slides showing mixed-use, affordable housing, and transit-oriented development to illustrate how density can be successfully clustered to provide an attractive alternative to typical single-use, suburban environments.

Fleissig currently is working on a joint effort by the EPA and the Congress for New Urbanism to develop a "Smart Scorecard," which could promote better options for mixed-use development, increase accessibility and promote sustainable investment decisions by the private sector.
