Tim Gill, founder and chairman of Denver-based Quark Inc., has been selected to receive the 1999 Dean's Award for Entrepreneurial Excellence from CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's College of Engineering and Applied Science.
He is receiving the award at the college's scholarship banquet on the evening of Oct. 5.
Gill earned his bachelor's degree in applied mathematics in 1976 and went on to head a $1 billion computer software company. Quark Inc. is a leader in the high-end electronic publishing and design industry.
"He goes beyond the typical definition of the high-tech entrepreneur in that Tim Gill is also an incredibly generous philanthropist," said College Development Director Paul Bauman. "He gives away a higher percentage of his wealth than many of the success stories you hear about. We are particularly pleased that he will receive this award at our annual scholarship banquet."
Quark Inc. has developed several text processing products since its founding in 1981, but the company hit the jackpot with its widely used desktop publishing software, QuarkXPress, released in 1987.
As the company's chairman and chief technology officer, Gill oversees strategic development of Quark's existing products and at least six other technologies under development in the company's research and development centers in Denver, Chicago, Germany, Singapore and India.
A strong supporter of social justice organizations and educational institutions, Gill has helped to fund the gay and lesbian movement in Colorado, as well as national scholarship programs for women and minorities in engineering and other causes.
