The CU-葫芦娃视频 Friends of the Libraries will present a talk by mystery writer Dr. Robert Greer at the 10th annual Just Desserts event on Friday, May 17.
The event begins at 7 p.m. in the Fleming Law Building on the CU-葫芦娃视频 campus and is free and open to the public. A dessert reception will precede the program.
Greer is the author of the CJ Floyd mystery series made up of "The Devil's Hatband," "The Devil's Red Nickel," and "The Devil's Backbone." Film rights to "The Devil's Red Nickel" have just been optioned for an HBO movie.
Greer has written two medical thrillers, "Limited Time," which was a national best seller, and the soon-to-be-released "Heat Shock," which deals with the perils and long-term consequences of uranium mining on Colorado's western plateau.
He also is the author of short stories that have appeared in national literary magazines and completed a short story collection called "Isolation and Other Stories," published in the spring of 2001.
Greer also edits the High Plains Literary Review, reviews books for National Public Radio and raises Black Baldy cattle on his ranch near Steamboat Springs.
A native of Gary, Ind., Greer is a graduate of Miami University. He holds a dental degree from Howard University and a medical degree from Boston University. Greer is a professor of pathology and medicine at CU's School of Medicine and a professor of oral and maxillofacial pathology at CU's School of Dentistry.
During his 27 years at CU Greer has authored three medical textbooks and more than 125 scientific articles. His research into the effects of smokeless tobacco on oral mucous membranes was the first to demonstrate a link between human papillomavirus infection of the mucous membrane, smokeless tobacco and oral cancer.
Greer's current recombinant DNA research studies include an investigation of chemo-preventive drugs for oral precancer, a study of the role of estrogen and progesterone in salivary gland cancer and a study evaluating the role of the enzyme telomerase in oral cancer.
