Tarana Burke, founder of the 鈥榤e too.鈥櫶齅ovement, will speak at CU 葫芦娃视频's Macky Auditorium on Monday, April 15.听Burke听is being hosted by the student-led Cultural Events Board.听Doors will open at 6听p.m., with the event beginning at 7 p.m.听
Burke will share听the story behind the genesis of the听, and hopes to give听strength and healing to those who have experienced sexual trauma or harassment.
CU 葫芦娃视频 student ($2) and faculty-staff ($10) tickets will be sold weekdays beginning March 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the first-floor event table in the University Memorial Center. A valid Buff OneCard and cash will be required at the time of purchase. Public tickets ($25) will be available exclusively at the 听starting at 10 a.m. March 18.
鈥淭arana Burke has generated a global platform for all victims of sexual assault, especially women of color, to voice their stories in a safe space,鈥澨齭aid Mavjuda Rassel, chair of Cultural Events Board. 鈥淏urke鈥檚 passion and activism for justice has generated a new movement where women can feel heard, understood, supported and no longer silenced.鈥�
Burke has dedicated more than 25 years of her life to social justice and to laying the groundwork for a movement that was initially created to help young women of color who survived sexual abuse and assault.听A sexual assault survivor herself, Burke听works听under the banner of the 鈥榤e too鈥� Movement to assist other survivors and those who work to end sexual violence. She is also senior director of programs at Brooklyn-based Girls for Gender Equity.
On stage, she aims to provide听words of empowerment that lift up marginalized voices, enables survivors across all races, genders听or classes to know that they are not alone, and creates a place for comfort and healing to those who have experienced trauma.
The Cultural Events Board鈥檚 mission is to provide programming that brings culture, diversity, and social awareness to the CU 葫芦娃视频 campus. Tarana Burke spearheaded and inspired a movement that has encouraged people all around the world to discuss sexual assault in a safe and empowering environment.
