Welcome to a new year at CU ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ! I hope you are looking forward to this year as much as I am.
As you begin the fall semester, I encourage you to think about what you can do this year to leave your mark on campus. Everyone’s actions, no matter how big or small, can make a difference. There are many ways to be a leader in your campus community, and I encourage you to take just one small additional step toward becoming a better leader this year.
Leadership is shown in how we are involved. One of the things I love about CU is how many different ways students can get involved on campus and in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. Today, the Be Involved Fair will be on Norlin Quad. I encourage you to go, get some free food and giveaways, and be open to new opportunities. It may be out of your comfort zone right now to talk to people you don’t know, but I guarantee that if you can find a way to be a little bold, you will find some fresh ideas for getting involved and making change in your community.
Leadership is shown in how we act. Our Colorado Creed reminds us that we build our character on all the decisions we make and how we treat others. I’m so inspired that students created the expectation that we are to hold ourselves to a higher standard, and always take the high road. With the Creed, we can continue to set an example for years to come.
Leadership is shown in how we take care of others and ourselves. As your dean of students, I’m depending on you to help ensure this community is safe and everyone feels welcome. It’s on all of us to take care of each other and protect each other. If you see something concerning, or notice that the health and safety of a fellow Buff is at risk, don’t hesitate to call for help. Know how you can be an effective bystander and look out for other members of your community.
Leadership is shown in how we use our resources. On behalf of the Division of Student Affairs, we are here to support you, advocate for you and connect you to the right resources to help you succeed. It’s okay to ask for help! These resources will help you navigate campus, stay healthy, meet new people and ultimately support you in your academic journey.
And to our new Buffs, you are not only welcome here but you belong here. I look forward to seeing how you all leave your mark in your time at CU.
Have a great, productive semester. Remember that your actions can make a difference - get involved, stay safe and make good choices as you head into the year.
