Local students were among the 1,898 students who received degrees Dec. 21 during fall commencement at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The ceremony was held in the Coors Events/Conference Center on the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus. The Chancellor's Recognition Award for students receiving all As in their college careers was given to Nikhil Mankekar of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, Colo., who received a bachelor's degree in finance.

Demolition of the Hunter Science Building at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will begin the morning of Dec. 21, according to Mike Martens, project manager with the university's Facilities Management department. The 93-year-old building is being removed to make way for future construction of the ATLAS building and expansion of the Sibell Wolle Fine Arts Building. The ATLAS program -- the Alliance for Technology, Learning and Society -- supports technology use across campus.

Toothpaste, ketchup and water are just some of the fluids that will be analyzed during the next CU Wizards show "Go With the Flow" on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 9:30 a.m. in the Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry Building, room 140. University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ faculty members Janet deGrazia, of chemical engineering, and Brian Argrow, of aerospace engineering, will investigate the mysterious properties of several kinds of fluids, some of which move very slowly and others that move at supersonic speeds.

Because an estimated 10,000 people are expected to attend commencement exercises at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Dec. 21, those attending should plan to arrive early. Commencement begins at 9:30 a.m. in the Coors Events/Conference Center. The majority of parking for the commencement ceremony will be in the Regent Drive Autopark, just south of Colorado Avenue. Free parking for guests also will be available in other lots near the Coors Events/Conference Center and at campus meters.

Two University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ professors were named winners of this year's Colorado Book Awards. "Messages from Frank's Landing" by law Distinguished Professor Charles Wilkinson and "Crucible of War" by history Professor Fred Anderson took the awards for the "Colorado and the West" and "History and Biography" categories, respectively. A third book, "Riverwalk," written by William Wylie and published by University Press of Colorado, was the winner in the pictorial category. CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ is one of the member organizations of the University Press of Colorado.

University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ alumnus Peter B. Teets has been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to the post of Under Secretary of the Air Force, the second highest position in that branch of the military. Teets, 59, is a native of Denver and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in applied math, a program of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, in 1963 and 1965, respectively.

Despite layoffs and dampened consumer confidence, the Colorado economy will continue to grow in 2002, although at a slower pace than during the 1990s, according to CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ economist Richard Wobbekind.

Special recognition ceremonies will be hosted by most University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ schools and colleges in addition to the main university commencement ceremony on Friday, Dec. 21, at 9:30 a.m. in the Coors Events/Conference Center. Following is a schedule of special events in the schools, colleges and departments to honor the graduates, their families and guests. * Dec. 20 at 3 p.m. in Muenzinger E050, College of Architecture and Planning recognition ceremony, with reception to follow in the Environmental Design Building, room 134.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ on Dec. 13 filed a request for a declaratory judgment in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ County District Court, asking the court to declare that ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ County commissioners exceeded their authority when they voted the county new power to regulate development of the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ South campus. The university filed the request following ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ County's November vote to change the county's land use code. University officials opposed the passage of the new regulations in public sessions before ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ County commissioners on two occasions.

The University of Colorado Board of Regents has authorized the campus to enter into negotiations with Trammell Crow Residential, a Denver-based, diversified commercial real estate services firm, for the development of a new student apartment-style residential complex at Williams Village. The Board of Regents also approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ on the development of the project at its Dec. 13 meeting. The ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ City Council approved the agreement last month.
