The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Friends of the Libraries is kicking off the 2001-2002 season of programs with a public lecture by Professor David M. Armstrong, of CU's environmental, population and organismic biology department, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 8. Armstrong will speak on "What the Mice Know: Patterns in the Distribution of Colorado Mammals" in room M459 in Norlin Library. A reception will follow the talk.

Bill Coleman, co-founder, chairman, and chief strategy officer of BEA Systems, will be awarded the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Entrepreneur of the Year Award at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 15. Coleman will give a public address that is free and open to the public with seating on a first-come, first-served basis. The speech will be presented at Macky Auditorium, 17th Street and University Avenue, on the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus.

Navajo star and constellation myths, including the story of the creation of stars, will be explored during a live astronomy show at Fiske Planetarium on the campus of the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. John Stocke, a CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ professor of astrophysical and planetary sciences, will present "Navajo Skies" at Fiske Planetarium on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at 7:30 p.m.

Candice A. Bowen has been appointed to the position of director of the Office of Sexual Harassment Policy at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, according to Ron Stump, vice chancellor for student affairs. The appointment has been approved by CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Chancellor Richard Byyny and is effective Nov. 1. Bowen replaces Andrea Goldblum, director of judicial affairs, who had held both positions for the past year and a half.

Shijie Zhong, an assistant professor of physics at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, has been awarded a prestigious $625,000 Packard Fellowship. The David and Lucile Packard Foundation cited Zhong and 23 other recipients as among the most promising young science and engineering researchers at universities in the United States. Other 2001 recipients included young faculty members from Yale, Princeton, Harvard and Stanford universities, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the universities of Chicago, California and Michigan.

Women business leaders from the venture capital, fitness and technology industries will speak to CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students on Friday, Nov. 9, as part of the Committee of 200 annual seminar. The CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Deming Center for Entrepreneurship and the Graduate Women in Business, both at the Leeds School of Business, will host this year's C200 Outreach Seminar, "Refining the Roadmap to Success." This seminar has rotated among the country's top business schools including Harvard, Columbia, Stanford and Wharton and attracts some of the country's leading women in business.

Investment banking will be the focus of the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Leeds School of Business Investment Banking Forum, sponsored by Lehman Brothers, Inc., on Friday, Nov. 2. The keynote speaker is Barbara M. Bryne, managing director of Lehman Brothers' Global Technology Group. Byrne will address "The Ins and Outs of Investment Banking" from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the Coors Events/Conference Center, room 4.

Seven new Daniels Scholars, of the 50 selected for 2001, have enrolled at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ for the fall semester, the highest number of all public institutions in the state. The announcement was made by Eric Doepel of the CU Foundation and Carrie Besnette of the Daniels Fund. According to Besnette, director of the Daniels College Prep and Scholarship Program, scholarship winners from Colorado receive support to attend any school in the country.

Everyone wants to make the world a better place and every year on Oct. 27, Make A Different Day powerfully moves millions of volunteers across the country to act on their convictions. Last Saturday, 42 volunteers from the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ participating in Make A Difference Day activities went to neighborhoods around the county, helping local people with their gardening chores or working to beautify public places.

Beginning Nov. 1, University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students, staff and faculty will notice posters and stickers around campus asking them to turn out lights and put their computers in "sleep mode" when they are not in use - all in the name of conservation. The stickers and posters, which read "Generation Green: When Not in Use Turn Out the Juice," are part of a yearlong experimental effort by the CU Environmental Center and Facilities Management to curb electricity use on the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus. Facilities Management has provided $15,000 for the project.
