Stephen D. Bechtel, Jr., chairman emeritus of Bechtel Group Inc., was honored as an Engineer of Distinction by the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s College of Engineering and Applied Science at the 35th annual Engineering Awards Banquet on April 14. The award, established in 1997 and presented by Ross B. Corotis, dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science, recognizes his lifetime achievements in the engineering profession.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ undergraduates in the fields of psychology, biology and kinesiology will present research findings on Wednesday, April 26, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the University Memorial Center's Glenn Miller Ballroom. Refreshments will be provided at the fifth annual Undergraduate Research Day, which is free and open to the public.

Five alumni and the dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ were honored with Distinguished Engineering Alumni Awards at the 35th annual Engineering Awards Banquet on April 14.

Five outstanding members of the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus, including students, faculty and staff, have been selected to receive the spring semester Building Community Recognition Awards. The awards, sponsored by the Building Community Committee, are given to campus members who show exceptional involvement, commitment and dedication to making the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus a more welcoming community. The honorees are:

Three stellar seniors at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ area high schools are heading to the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ thanks to the fundraising efforts of the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Chapter of the Alumni Association, which is awarding each student $2,500 toward his or her tuition. The students and their families will receive their gifts at the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Scholarship Reception Sunday, April 30, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The chapter also is supporting nine former scholarship recipients (who are now upperclassmen at CU) with $200 to put toward books for classes.

The Society for Creative Anachronism will provide a taste of the Middle Ages in an evening of sword-fighting, romantic chivalry, medieval music and dance, and medieval arts and crafts at the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Engineering Quadrangle Courtyard on Friday, April 21, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The first of a new annual series of lectures given by Alpha of Colorado Phi Beta Kappa Scholars will be held Friday, April 14, at 7 p.m. in the Humanities Building, room 1B50, at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. A reception will follow.

China, the most populous nation in the world with more than 1.3 billion people and a history stretching back 3,500 years, has become an increasingly significant force in the world. ItÂ’s a nation just beginning to flex its economic and global muscle. But itÂ’s also a very complex nation facing problems, many of which receive little or no attention outside its borders, according to University of Colorado professors Timothy Weston and Lionel Jensen, co-editors of the book "China Beyond the Headlines," published by Rowman and Littlefield Publishers.

Twenty-five children in Mr. Quezada's second grade class will have front row seats at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18. They will be clicking on Virtual Chautauqua and watching a video of Bonnie Phipps and her cast singing "Meatballs and Spaghetti," among other online performances. During their computer lab time, these children will join more than 100 of their schoolmates at Rocky Mountain Elementary at 800 E. 5th Ave. in Longmont, where teachers have used Virtual Chautauqua to introduce them to Colorado performing artists online.

Delbert Elliott, professor of sociology and director of the Center for the Study and Prevention of Violence at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, has been appointed scientific editor for the U.S. Surgeon General's Report to the Nation on Youth Violence. Elliott, a nationally recognized authority on violence prevention, will be among the authors of the report and also will be responsible for editing the report for scientific quality and merit. The report is due out at the end of the year.
