The wonders of light -- from how you get a suntan to how fiber optics can transmit a telephone conversation -- will be the subject of the next CU Wizards science show for children at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. Optical physicist and Professor Dana Anderson will explain the light spectrum, from ultraviolet to infrared, and demonstrate the wonderful world of lasers in "Fantastic Light." HeÂ’ll use a laser to explode a balloon within a balloon and perform other hands-on demonstrations designed for children in grades 5 through 9.

High school students in Strasburg, Limon and Cheyenne Wells will see Shakespeare taken from the page to the stage this month by the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s acclaimed Colorado Shakespeare Festival. Two professional actors with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival will perform scenes, songs and sonnets in a program titled, "Boy Meets Girl Meets Shakespeare," in a tour of the three communities April 27 and April 28. The actors will begin their tour with a performance at Cheyenne Wells High School, starting at 1 p.m. on April 27.

A University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ student has been named a Barry M. Goldwater Scholar through a selective national merit scholarship competition. Alan Arrowsmith, a junior majoring in biochemistry and mathematics from Waterloo, Ontario, was one of 316 students awarded scholarships this year by the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation. Arrowsmith will receive up to $7,500 for his tuition, fees, books and room and board expenses for the 1998-99 academic year.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ student volunteers will participate in a number of service activities throughout National Volunteer Week, April 19-25. National Volunteer Week honors people who participate in volunteer community service and calls attention to the on-going need for individuals and groups to serve in their communities. CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students actively volunteer their time and energy to numerous projects and organizations throughout the year. A sampling of the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ student volunteer projects that coincide with National Volunteer Week fellows:

Professor Lorrie Shepard, interim dean of education at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, has been elected president of the American Educational Research Association, the most prominent national and international organization devoted to advancing educational research.

Four finalists have been named for the position of vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, according to search committee Chair Peter Spear, dean of arts and sciences.

A University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ program that brought college students and architects into ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Valley middle schools to teach architecture has won the 1998 Award of Excellence and Innovation from the American Association for Career Education.

Sonny Flowers, a well-known ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ attorney who has been active in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and Denver civic pursuits for more than two decades, will receive the 1998 Community Service Award from the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Chapter of the University of Colorado Alumni Association at a reception on Sunday, April 26. FlowersÂ’ recognition is part of the annual Scholarship Tea, hosted by the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ alumni chapter at the Koenig Alumni Center at Broadway and University Avenue from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Three University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ staff members were honored with 1998 Employee of the Year awards at a reception at Regent Administrative Center April 1 hosted by Chancellor Richard Byyny.

University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ faculty and staff drive to campus less, hold fewer campus parking permits and ride RTD, Skip and Hop buses more since the university initiated an EcoPass program for its employees Jan. 1. The pilot program allows unlimited free rides on all RTD buses, including the Skip and Hop services, for more than 5,600 full-time and part-time faculty and staff at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The program was made possible through a partnership between the university, the city of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and RTD.
