Scholarships Awarded To Seven CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Students

The Center for Educational and Career Transition (WomenÂ’s Center) at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ has announced the recipients of its 1997 fall semester scholarships. The recipients were selected from a field of more than 30 candidates. The scholarships are based on academic standing and financial need.

Mark Anderson, student library technician for the government publications library, has been selected as the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s Student Employee of the Year. Anderson received a plaque and a $50 award April 9 from Ron Stump, dean of students, at a ceremony in the library. Forty eight nominations were received this year, the first time the award has been given. All nominees received a certificate of appreciation in recognition of their efforts.

International Space Conference Set For May 19-23 In Estes Park, Colorado

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Researcher Awarded Six-Year, $525,000 Biomedical Grant

A University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ researcher has been awarded a $525,000 grant from the Burroughs Wellcome Fund to study chromosome movements during cell division, a project that may help lead to new treatments for diseases.

LASP To Honor Graduating Students Who Built NASA Satellite

A tour, talks and presentations on a spacecraft built by students at the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics that is now set for launch in late summer or early fall will be held at the CU Research Park May 15. The event at LASPÂ’s Space Technology Building, which begins at 8:30 a.m., will honor graduating seniors who have worked on the Student Nitric Oxide Explorer satellite. The event includes talks by participating CU students and faculty as well as Universities Space Research Association President Paul Coleman. USRA is co-sponsoring the mission with NASA.

The University of Colorado and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) have agreed to a plan that brings the CU campuses into full compliance with hazardous waste regulations addressed in an order issued in December 1994. The compliance plan will be shared with other interested institutions as a model for resolving hazardous waste management issues.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s Center for Environmental Journalism has selected five journalists as Ted Scripps Fellows in Environmental Journalism for the 1997-98 academic year. Starting next fall, the fellows will study environmental science and policy for two semesters at the university.

Engineering College Names Distinguished Alums For 1997

Eight people were honored with 1997 Distinguished Engineering Alumni Awards at an April 24 banquet sponsored by the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's College of Engineering and Applied Science. Presented for the 32nd consecutive year, the awards are given to alumni of the university's engineering college for outstanding careers and achievement in academic and professional work. In special cases, non-alums also are recognized with this award for outstanding service to the engineering college.
