CU Law Professor Tapped By Treasury Department

University of Colorado School of Law Professor Norton Steuben has accepted a two-year assignment from the U.S. Treasury DepartmentÂ’s Office of Technical Assistance to serve as resident tax policy adviser to the government of Ukraine. A faculty member since 1968, Steuben will begin his residence in July in Kiev, Ukraine, which gained its independence after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991. Steuben is an expert on tax law and real estate law and has received the universityÂ’s prestigious PresidentÂ’s Teaching Scholars award.

CU Law Students Sweep Trademark Competition

Two teams of University of Colorado law students captured first and second place in a regional moot court competition on trademark and unfair competition law in San Francisco. The winning team will proceed to the 1997 national finals in Washington, D.C., on March 22. Placing first and winning the best oralists and best briefs awards were Nancy Fogle of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and Kirstin Stoll of Thornton. Second place went to Marco Chayet of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, Brad Hattenbach of Westminster and Kate Wingard of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ.

CU Law Students Place In National Competitions

Several University of Colorado School of Law students have won or placed in recent student trial competitions. •Winners of the Feb. 12 Rothgerber Moot Court Competition final round at CU are third-year students Alison Cornell, Debra Trapp and Tom Ward, who also participated in the New York Bar Association National Moot Court Competition. Second-place Rothgerber winners are third-year students Michele Clark, Corey Cutter and Elizabeth Moulton. Trapp was given the Austin Scott Jr. Award for oral advocacy.

Faculty Member Appointed To Direct Journalism Program

Associate Professor Larry Weisberg of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication has been appointed director of the graduate program in integrated marketing communications at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. Until his appointment as director of the IMC program, Weisberg headed the journalism schoolÂ’s undergraduate advertising sequence. The advertising program will be directed by Associate Professor Brett Robbs, a journalism faculty member since 1992.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Announces New Humanities, Arts Center

ItÂ’s not a place, itÂ’s more an idea, but the humanities disciplines at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ can now call it a home. The Center for Humanities and the Arts was launched officially on March 5 at a reception celebrating the critical role the arts and humanities play in a true liberal arts education.

Denver Media Expert To Speak at CU-BOULDER

Trygve E. Myhren, president of Myhren Media Inc. of Denver, will give the Ralph L. Crosman Memorial Lecture March 13 at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The free public lecture sponsored by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication will be at 5 p.m. in Old Main Chapel with a reception following in the Heritage Center. The title is “The Future of the Media and Their Obligations in a Democratic Society.” Myhren has received numerous honors and awards, including the cable industryÂ’s premier achievement award, the 1988 Distinguished Vanguard Leadership Award.

CU-BOULDER To Host Statewide Minority Career Conference

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will host a statewide minority career conference on March 18. The event will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the University Memorial Center Glenn Miller Ballroom on the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus. African American, American Indian, Asian American and Hispanic/Latino college students from across the state and alumni of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ are invited to attend the conference. Those attending will have the chance to meet with employer representatives and explore employment opportunities. Last year more than 100 employer representatives attended.

March Skies To Bring Comet, Moon Eclipse

Stargazers have several celestial treats in store for March, from a comet and a partial lunar eclipse to the vernal equinox heralding the first day of spring. Coloradans should have some gorgeous nighttime views, weather permitting, and those in the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ area can attend regular open houses at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ each Friday in March, except March 28, and April, according to astronomer Katy Garmany, director of Fiske Planetarium and Sommers-Bausch Observatory.

Students Win CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Diversity Scholarships

Several undergraduate students at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ have received diversity scholarships to study in other countries. Two diversity scholarships, one awarded by CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and the other by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education, help cover expenses in the Study Abroad program for Colorado residents who are underrepresented on the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus because they are ethnic minorities or from the stateÂ’s rural areas.
