Professor Herbert Covert Receives Fulbright Award For Vietnam Research

University of Colorado Associate Professor Herbert Covert has been awarded a Fulbright grant by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board to conduct research in Vietnam. Covert, of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's anthropology department, will conduct paleontological field research with colleagues from the Geologic Museum of the Department of Geology and Minerals of Vietnam in Hanoi. He also will study primate conservation and ecology with colleagues at the Endangered Primate Rescue Center of Cuc Phuong National Park.

International Workshop To Focus On Green Design, Renewable Energies & Sustainability

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will host an international Workshop on Earth Systems Engineering, Oct. 3-6, aimed at promoting the integration of green design, renewable energies and other sustainability concepts in engineering education, research and practice. Two free, public events will be held as part of the conference, including an evening lecture by Amory B. Lovins, chief executive officer of the non-profit Rocky Mountain Institute in Snowmass, Colo., which will kick off the workshop.

Community Meeting On CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Williams Village Student Housing Project To Be Held October 4

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will hold a public meeting on the Williams Village student housing expansion project on Oct. 4 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Stearns Central, room 178, at the Williams Village complex. According to Derrick Watson, project coordinator for the department of Housing, the purpose of the meeting is to provide residents with an update on the status of the project, including master site planning sketches, preliminary design guidelines and the development schedule.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Cultural Unity Center Receives Collegiate Leadership Award

The Cultural Unity Center at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ has been awarded the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute's Collegiate Leadership Award. The award will be presented at the institute's annual conference in Chicago on Sept. 28. Approximately 1,500 present and future leaders are expected to attend.

Chemistry Of Cooking Kicks Off 25th Season Of CU Wizards

Several top University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ science professors will once again bring the fascinating world of science to young minds as the 2001-2002 CU Wizards program kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 29. The season opens with CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ chemistry and biochemistry Professor David Nesbitt's "Chemistry in the Kitchen." The free hour-long show will begin at 9:30 a.m. in Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry room 140. During the show Nesbitt will explore several topics including fermentation, how high altitude affects cooking and how cheese and ice cream are made.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Unity Walk To Help Bring Campus Community Together

Seeking to promote unity in a time of tragedy, the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Undergraduate Academy will sponsor a unity and remembrance walk at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 25, to mark the two-week anniversary of the terrorist attacks on America. The event will convene with a brief program on the steps of Norlin Library on the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ quadrangle. Participants will then make a short loop through campus, taking about an hour to complete the walk.

Susan Kent Appointed Interim Associate Vice Chancellor For Faculty Affairs At CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ

Professor Susan Kent of the history and women's studies departments has been named interim associate vice chancellor for faculty affairs at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The appointment was announced by Provost Phil DiStefano and is pending approval by Chancellor Richard Byyny. Kent replaces Todd Gleeson, who was recently named interim dean of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's College of Arts and Sciences.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Faculty To Host "Teach-In" Sept. 24 To Discuss Terrorist Attacks

More than a dozen University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ faculty members will participate in a "Teach-in on the International Crisis" on Monday, Sept. 24, to discuss the recent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C. The teach-in will be held from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the University Memorial Center's Forum Room on the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus, and is free and open to the public.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Freshmen Numbers Down In 2001, Total Enrollment Is Up

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's official fall 2001 enrollment counts include fewer freshmen than in fall 2000, but more students overall. CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ planned to reduce freshmen this fall and this year's final census total of 4,982 is very close to the target of 4,950 set in December 2000. Last fall there were 5,095 freshmen. The fall 2001 total is lower by 113 students or 2 percent.

CU Professor Carl Wieman Named NSF Distinguished Teaching Scholar

The National Science Foundation today named physics Professor Carl E. Wieman of the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ one of seven scientists and engineers in the United States to receive the first Director's Awards for Distinguished Teaching Scholars. The award is NSF's "highest honor for excellence in both teaching and research." Each recipient will receive $300,000 over the next four years to continue sharing their teaching talents and research excellence with students at all levels and with the public at large.
