CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Budget Director Resigns For Post At UC-Davis

Richard "Ric" Porreca, executive director of budget, planning and analysis at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, announced today he has accepted the position of associate vice chancellor for resource management and planning at the University of California, Davis. His appointment is effective Aug. 1. Porreca has been head of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Office of Budget, Planning and Analysis since July 1994. Prior to that time he served in a number of posts at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and for the University of Colorado system administration.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Professor Wins Outstanding New Faculty Award

Kristi Anseth, assistant professor of chemical engineering at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, has been selected to receive the Dow Outstanding New Faculty Award for the Rocky Mountain Section of the American Society for Engineering Education. The award, given each year to only one individual in all engineering disciplines at all schools in the Rocky Mountain region, will be presented at the ASEE national meeting in Charlotte, N.C., in June. Anseth also will be recognized at ASEE's Rocky Mountain Section meeting, March 26-27 in Provo, Utah.

Silent Auction To Benefit Minority MBA Students

Fiske Planetarium At CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ To Show Matinees March 23-25

Homeless Resistance in Three Western Cities," a lecture by University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ sociology Professor Dan Cress, will be presented from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, April 1, in room 235 of the University Memorial Center. The lecture is free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by the Center of the American West.

CU-Wizards Show On March 27 To Focus On The Physics Of Music

Local children will have the opportunity to learn about music during spring break at the next CU Wizards show on Saturday, March 27, at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. Jim Faller, who is a JILA fellow, chief of the Quantum Physics division of NIST and CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ physics professor, will present "The Physics of Music" at 9:30 a.m. in the Duane Physics building, room G1B30. NIST is the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The event is free and open to the public.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ To Offer Seven New Study Abroad Programs

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ has added seven new programs to current choices undergraduate students have for studying abroad. "The new programs offer the students more study abroad options to choose from," said Sylvie Burnet-Jones, director of the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ study abroad office. Several programs are unique in that they are directed by CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ faculty or are the only programs of their kind to be offered to undergraduates.

Eight CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Graduate Programs Cited Among Nation's Best In Magazine

Eight graduate programs at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ were cited for excellence in 1999 in selected disciplines ranked by U.S. News and World Report. CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s Ph.D. program in atomic and molecular physics was ranked fourth in the nation. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology was ranked first, followed by Harvard and Stanford. Overall, CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's doctoral program in physics tied for 25th best in the nation along with the Ohio State University and Rice University.

Prominent Physicists Hired At CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ And JILA

Two rising stars in the field of physics have been hired to teach and conduct research at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The appointments of Margaret Murnane and Henry Kapteyn as tenured professors of physics were approved March 18 by the CU Board of Regents. The husband and wife team will join the physics department in mid-August. They also will be fellows of JILA, a joint institute of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
