The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ received approval of a $28.1 million budget for fiscal 2001-2002 from the CU Board of Regents at its June 21 meeting in Denver. The 2001-2002 athletics budget is part of the overall ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus budget submitted by Chancellor Richard L. Byyny. As an auxiliary enterprise, Intercollegiate Athletics must generate increased revenue to cover all increases in expenditures. This year's budget represents a 5.1 percent increase from last year.

Editors: The media is invited to visit the ITL Laboratory on June 21 or June 22 when K-12 students will be using the new laptop computers in the pre-college engineering class "How Do Things Work?" The class, made up exclusively of older elementary and middle-school girls, meets both days from 9 a.m. to noon in ITLL room 150.

Sponsored by the College of Business and local corporations, the free program offers 30 outstanding students from diverse backgrounds the opportunity to get a head start on their college careers.

University of Colorado students from the colleges of business and engineering have presented the city of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ with a proposal, created during a business plan competition course, for a state-of-the-art indoor soccer field. The students designed the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Valley Sports Complex to alleviate the growing demand for indoor recreational facilities in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The plan features two state-of-the-art soccer fields in Valmont City Park.

Three University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students have been awarded Fulbright grants for the 2001-2002 academic year, and another was selected as an alternate. Since the university began recording award information in 1977, a total of 74 students have received Fulbright grants and 17 have been selected as alternates. CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Fulbright award winners are: Dan Hanley, a doctoral candidate in education, was awarded a scholarship to Norway. He will examine Norway's school-based evaluation system through case studies of two schools with exemplary programs.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Chancellor Richard Byyny announced today that Bob and Judy Charles have donated funds to create a $1.5 million endowed chair at the University of Colorado's College of Music. The new chair represents the second such endowment for the College of Music in the last seven months and the two endowed chairs are the first ever for the College of Music in CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's 125-year history. According to Daniel Sher, dean of the College of Music, this unprecedented support for endowed chairs is testament to the dedication of a large number of faculty and staff.

The Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics' 10th Quadrennial Symposium is being held at the Raintree Plaza Hotel in Longmont through June 22. More than 100 students and 260 scientists and researchers from around the world have gathered to discuss topics on solar-terrestrial physics and atmospheric science. They will hear from guest speakers and participate in tutorial lectures and poster sessions. The meeting began June 17.

Mark your calendars and pull out your picnic baskets for the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's second annual "Picnic on the Quad" July 7 beginning at 4 p.m. in the historic Norlin Quadrangle.

Dale Hatfield, director of the Interdisciplinary Telecommunications Program at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, has been appointed a member of the Technological Advisory Council to the Federal Communications Commission. The federal advisory committee, which is comprised of 33 leading technologists, helps provide technological insights that the FCC needs to stay abreast of innovations in communications and related industries.

Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will explore the dynamics of the solar system and the way it was shaped by millions of collisions in "Cosmic Collisions and Our Solar System," on Friday, June 29, at 8 p.m. at the planetarium. The pre-recorded show takes viewers back in time to the beginning of the solar system when the devastating impact of asteroids, comets and millions of chunks of floating debris reworked the surfaces of the planets.
