Twenty-five journalists from the United States and Canada, along with two senior environmental policy advisers from Mongolia, are scheduled to attend the second annual Scripps Howard Institute on the Environment May 14-19 at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The institute, hosted by the School of Journalism and Mass Communication's Center for Environmental Journalism, is a week-long educational program for journalists who cover environmental issues.

State Farm Insurance Donates $100,000 Toward Endowed Chair For CU's Gilbert F. White

The State Farm Fire and Casualty Insurance Co. and State Farm General Insurance Co. have donated $100,000 toward an endowed chair to honor University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Professor Emeritus Gilbert F. White, known worldwide as the "father of floodplain management." Becky Turner of State Farm's regional office in Greeley presented the check in a May 2 ceremony at the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Natural Hazards Center. The CU Foundation is hoping to raise $3 million to endow the chair by White's 90th birthday on Nov. 26.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Graduate Students In Integrated Marketing Communications Win National Fellowship Awards

Jason Riley and Kelly Shelton, two graduate students in integrated marketing communications at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, have been awarded $8,000 fellowships to attend a national seminar at Harvard University this June, sponsored by the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation. The seminar is limited to 30 participants. According to Tom Duncan, IMC faculty adviser, the foundation's decision to give two awards to students from the same university is rare and highlights these students' exceptional work experience and strong academic performance.

CU Student Alumni Organization Announces 2001 Teaching Awards

The Student Organization for Alumni Relations has announced the 2001 teaching award recipients of the 40th Annual Teaching Recognition Awards at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. Presented each spring since 1962, SOAR's Teaching Recognition Awards honor faculty members who excel in the classroom. The SOAR awards are the only faculty honors in which the selection and administration is done by CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ undergraduate students. Awarded in four class-size categories, each winner receives $1,500 from the CU Parents Association and the Alumni Association's Directors Club.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Foreign Language Lab Reaches Out To Colorado Schools To Promote Interest In Languages

Beyond its core focus of supporting CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's five foreign language departments on campus, CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Anderson Language Technology Center has existing outreach programs and several new ones planned for fall 2001 to expose Coloradans to foreign language offerings not widely available in Colorado. ALTEC Director Kuan-Yi Rose Chang believes the CU programs will help schools throughout the state improve their foreign language instruction and help the state gradually expand foreign language offerings in public schools.

Taiwan native Kuan-Yi Rose Chang is on a mission to broaden the cultural awareness and foreign language skills of University of Colorado students and Coloradans. An adjunct professor of Spanish and Chinese and director of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Anderson Language Technology Center (ALTEC), Chang believes that globalization and the rapid growth of minority populations in the United States increasingly demands that Americans broaden their understanding of other cultures. Part of the broadening process also should include expanding Americans' foreign language skills, she says.
