A symposium sponsored by the National Academy of Sciences to be held on the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus Oct. 31 will feature talks by three of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s top researchers, all members of the prestigious national academy.

One of the most violent phenomena in astronomy – supernovae – will be the topic of a live astronomy show at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Fiske Planetarium on Friday, Nov. 3, and Tuesday, Nov. 7, at 7:30 p.m. University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ astronomy Professor Richard McCray will delve into the subject of supernovae, looking at everything from ancient Chinese inscriptions to current observations of these rare stars and how new observations are used to measure the expansion of the universe.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ has added 10 new programs to the choices undergraduate students have to study around the globe, including Cuba, Jordan and the Dominican Republic. The new additions will start in spring semester 2001. CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students can now choose from more than 140 Study Abroad programs in 70 countries. Programs are available in a variety of lengths, including by semester, academic year or summer. Not all choices are available for all programs. The deadline to apply for fall 2001 programs is March l.

Patients battling the often crippling effects of bipolar disorder now may have another ally in their fight to control the disease – their own family members. Researchers at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ have completed a yearlong study showing that patients who received medication and an experimental family-focused treatment program had fewer episodes of the disease, and longer delays before relapses, than those receiving medication and standard community treatment.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ on Nov. 1-2 will host a presentation exploring the merit and value of student honor codes and the differences they make in academic integrity on campuses. The presentation will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 1, from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Aspen Room 215 at the University Memorial Center, and again on Thursday, Nov. 2, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Regent Administrative Center room 302.

University of Colorado football fans will have the chance to help ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s needy families while they cheer on the Buffs against the Oklahoma State Cowboys on Saturday, Oct. 28. CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and Community Food Share will host a food drive at Folsom Stadium that day to collect canned and other non-perishable food, as well as cash contributions, from fans as they enter the stadium.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s Wardenburg Health Center will offer meningitis and flu vaccinations to CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at the Recreation Center. The immunizations will be available on a walk-in basis from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Twenty-five Buffalo Hug pillows will be delivered to ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Community Hospital's pediatrics ward and emergency room on Tuesday, Oct. 24, at 1:30 p.m. by several CU athletes and coaches as part of a community outreach program of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s Office of Community Affairs.

An underwater breathing device created by two University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ researchers was named one of 18 semifinalists in Hammacher Schlemmer's 2000 Search for Invention Competition. The Pressurized Snorkel was invented by Igor Gamow, a professor of chemical engineering and well-known inventor of devices to enhance human performance, and by research associate Dana Ruehlman. Their patented device is as easy to use as a snorkel but enables divers to stay up to 12 feet underwater for several hours.
