Two new programs at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ designed to support the campusÂ’s Building Community initiative, encourage networking and increase staff awareness of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's role in the four-campus system will begin in September. An intensive awareness-building program, called ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Campus Perspective, was piloted last spring and will consist of six half-day sessions scheduled from September through December. A companion program, called University Perspective, is being launched as a pilot this fall to complement the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Campus Perspective.

Top minority MBA students from around the country will attend the ninth annual University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Andersen Consulting Leadership Seminar July 12-16. The seminar is one of the nationÂ’s most comprehensive forums for MBA students to create solutions to e-business problems, develop leadership skills and network with peers, respected academics and business leaders.

More than 800 people are expected to attend the 20th anniversary celebration of CU Upward Bound July 28 in the Glenn Miller Ballroom at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The federally funded program provides qualifying high school students living on or near American Indian reservations the opportunity to experience a college atmosphere before they graduate from high school. More than 1,000 students have participated in the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ program.

Note: Seven students who were selected by the NACME Vanguard Program to enter CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s engineering college this fall are on campus through July 14, participating in the Summer Bridge experience. Hector Moreno, a graduate of North High School in Denver, will be the first in his family to go to college when he enrolls in CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s College of Engineering and Applied Science this fall.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ College of Business Dean Steven Manaster has appointed Professor Richard Wobbekind as associate dean of external relations, pending approval by the Board of Regents at their Aug. 3 meeting. Wobbekind will continue to serve in his current role as director of the collegeÂ’s Business Research Division. "RichÂ’s expertise with state and local businesses will help us forge important partnerships with these constituencies," said Manaster. "He will be instrumental in promoting our outreach programs and building relationships with companies throughout the state."

The constellations, myths and astronomical phenomena of the sky in the Southern Hemisphere will be explored in a live astronomy show at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Fiske Planetarium on Friday, July 7. Deidre Brucker, a University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ senior majoring in computer science, will present "Southern Skies" at 8 p.m. "Most people in the Northern Hemisphere never get the chance to witness the splendor of the southern sky," Brucker said. Brucker will introduce the audience to some Hindu and East Asian constellations.

MEDIA ADVISORY Reporters and photographers are invited to cover CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s "Picnic on the Quad," July 8, beginning at 3 p.m. in the Norlin Quadrangle on campus. Free activities at the picnic will continue into the evening and include live music, hands-on science workshops for kids through CUÂ’s Science Discovery Program, ice skating and ice cream, sidewalk chalk art projects and special visits from Ralphie, CUÂ’s buffalo mascot, and Will Shakespeare himself.

Justin Colonna, the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ student who died in a snowstorm in December 1999 while hiking near South Arapaho Peak, has a new class dedicated to his memory.

Now that the smoke has cleared from two forest fires that ravaged the foothills of Jefferson and Larimer counties in June, the effectiveness of wildfire management practices is being questioned. Since early last century, fire suppression has been the staple of wildfire management. But many experts believe suppression has created conditions that are ripe for catastrophic wildfires.

A domed astronomical observatory at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s 9,500-foot-high Mountain Research Station 35 miles west of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will officially be dedicated on July 7 at 11 a.m. The new observatory, named the University of Colorado Alpine Observatory, houses an optical telescope with a 12.5-inch mirror purchased with NASA funds in 1998 by CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Senior Research Associate Alan Kiplinger for solar studies.
