Nominations for the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's highest recognition for teaching and research, the Hazel Barnes Prize, are now being accepted for 2000. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 18, 2000. The recipient of the Hazel Barnes Prize, the largest single faculty award funded by the university, will be recognized at the 2000 spring commencement exercises with an engraved University Medal and a cash award of $20,000. The money received can be used for personal or professional use as determined by the recipient.

Six prominent experts on various aspects of Mars exploration will be available for one-on-one media interviews from 4 p.m to 5 p.m. in room ESCI 265 of the Benson Earth Sciences Building at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ on Dec. 2. The speakers will participate in a symposium titled "Mars, Science, and Society at 7 p.m. that evening in room 100 of CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s Mathematics Building, located south of the intersection of Folsom Street and Colorado Avenue. The symposium is free and open to the public. The Benson Earth Sciences Building is located just west of the Mathematics Building.

Computer software invented at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ that grades the content of essay exams has also improved the writing of local sixth graders and helped launch a new company. The Intelligent Essay Assessor allowed sixth grade students at Platt Middle School in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ to improve their reading and writing as part of a computer tutor called Summary Street, teachers and researchers said.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will make the meningitis vaccine Menomune available to students for $72 on Dec. 7, 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Wardenburg Health Center.

A contingent of University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ faculty and students are descending on Kiruna, Sweden, to help undertake the largest field campaign ever to assess ozone concentrations and chemical changes in the Arctic stratosphere.

Even though flu season is here, it's not too late to get vaccinated. According to Barbara Brandt, director of infection control at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ’s Wardenburg Health Center, itÂ’s still early enough in the flu season to get a shot and boost your immune system to help fight off the virus.

Kristi Anseth, associate professor of chemical engineering at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, is among 100 top young innovators "who exemplify the spirit of innovation" in science, technology and the arts, as featured in the November/December issue of "Technology Review."

Dianna Ducote-Sabey has been selected to join the team of psychologists and counselors at Counseling and Psychological Services: A Multicultural Center, at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The appointment will be considered for approval at the Dec. 9 Board of Regents meeting in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. Ducote-Sabey is scheduled to start Jan. 10. "We are very pleased to have Dianna as a staff psychologist working with CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students, staff and faculty," said Eldridge Greer, director of the center.

Johanna B. Maes has been named the new director of the Pre-Collegiate Development program at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, according to Ken Wilson, director of the Student Academic Services Center. The appointment will be considered at the Dec. 9 Board of Regents' meeting in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and Maes will start Dec. 13, pending regents' approval. Maes, a CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ alumna, replaces Christopher Pacheco as director of the program. Pacheco assumed the position of associate director for academic support and grant operations at the center last January.
