1999 Safety Measures At CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Improve On Existing Programs

Following is an update of campus safety information for the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. While this fact sheet doesnÂ’t list every safety measure found on campus, it does provide information about some of the most visible. EMERGENCY CALL BOXES * Nineteen call boxes were installed in 1998-99 at a cost of $300,000, with the final one installed at the corner of 13th and Pennsylvania streets in July 1999. Twelve call boxes were in place previously, bringing the total to 31 emergency call boxes on the main CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus.

Two CU Faculty Are Finalists For Colorado Book Awards

Two CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ faculty members are finalists for the 8th annual Colorado Book Awards. Law professor and murder mystery novelist Marianne Wesson is a finalist in the Adult Fiction category for her book, "Render Up the Body." "IÂ’m delighted, of course, especially because it is possible to read ‘Render Up The BodyÂ’ as nothing more than a work of genre fiction," said Wesson. "But I hoped the book would find readers looking not just for a mystery, but also something more. This recognition is very meaningful to me, and very satisfying."

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Career Services Holds Career Fair On Sept. 22

The CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Career Services office, in conjunction with the colleges of Business and Engineering, will hold a Career Fair for all CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ students on Wednesday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Coors Events/Conference Center. The fair is open to CU students only and not to non-student job seekers. The Career Fair will give business representatives an opportunity to provide CU students with literature regarding their companies. Students are encouraged to meet with company representatives and learn about the interviewing process.

Fact Sheet: Chancellor's Committee On Women At UC ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ

The ChancellorÂ’s Committee on Women at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ has just released its second annual report. That 16-member committee, a representative group of faculty, staff and students, prepared a report that provides baseline data and recommendations concerning the current status of women on campus. The report formally documents the status of women at CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, analyzes quantitative and qualitative data by gender and ethnicity, and notes trends regarding equity and diversity over the past 10 years.

Black Hole Simulation Kicks Off Astronomy Series At CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Fiske Planetarium Sept. 10

"Black Holes and Relativity," a presentation by professor Andrew Hamilton, is the first in a series of live public astronomy shows at Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The program will be held on Friday Sept. 10 and Tuesday, Sept. 14, at 7:30 p.m. "Black Holes and Relativity" includes recent Hubble Space Telescope observations of possible black holes in distant galaxies and a look at other evidence of black holes in our own Milky Way galaxy. It features a fantastic but scientifically accurate view of a one-way flight into a black hole.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Optoelectronics Experts Meet With Congressmen

Three members of the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ-headquartered Optoelectronics Computing Systems Center were selected by the Optical Society of America to represent the U.S. optics industry at a recent U.S. House of Representatives reception. Hosted by the Coalition for National Science Funding, the event was designed to highlight past results of government-supported science and to illustrate the benefits and need for continued federal support.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Business Plan Competition Dramatically Increases Prize Money

With prize money driving Business Plan competition prestige, recent funding pledges have propelled the prize money for CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's entrepreneurship Business Plan competition to $45,000 — among the highest prize totals in the nation. The Business Plan competition culminates studentsÂ’ semester-long team project of creating a comprehensive plan for a new enterprise. Teams include undergraduate and graduate business and engineering students.

CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Conference Addresses Y2K Impact On Investments

Editors: The conference is open by invitation only but is open to reporters. An investment conference on Sept. 10-11, sponsored by the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's Burridge Center, will study the impact of a company's size on investment strategy -- including the dramatic effect Y2K may have on smaller firms' stock performance. Unlike their larger counterparts, small firms' stocks typically fluctuate dramatically during the first week of the year. Conference participants will explore potential ramifications fueled by Y2K uncertainties.
