CU ��«��Ƶ Chancellor Justin Schwartz announced today that the search for the next provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs is open. Interested candidates are invited to submit their application materials by Feb. 28.

“We are seeking an innovative, collaborative, engaged and empathic leader with a deep commitment to public higher education and the tenets of shared governance to serve as our next provost,” Schwartz said. “We also need a leader who is committed to CU ��«��Ƶ’s mission and has a history of facilitating and advancing excellence.”

Inquiries, applications, nominations and self-nominations should be made directly through the WittKieffer job posting, the executive search firm engaged to assist in the search process.

The provost fosters CU ��«��Ƶ’s excellence in research, creative work and teaching through forging new academic initiatives and recruiting and retaining a world-class faculty, as well as ensuring rigorous review of key faculty personnel actions. The provost also has oversight of the planning, quality and delivery of education to CU ��«��Ƶ’s undergraduate and graduate students, ensuring a holistic, inclusive integration of academic and student affairs that supports the intellectual, personal and professional development of all students.

In today’s announcement, the chancellor also thanked students, faculty and staff who participated in the listening sessions in December, which helped to inform the position profile for the next provost.

Finalists will visit campus in the spring semester. The chancellor plans to have a new provost in position by July 1, 2025.

Chancellor Justin Schwartz has opened the search for the next CU ��«��Ƶ provost, inviting interested parties to submit their materials by Feb. 28.

The CU ��«��Ƶ Distribution Center announced plans to open a storefront—located at 3300 Walnut Ave., Unit A, ��«��Ƶ, CO 80301—where students, faculty, staff and community members will be able to shop for surplus goods no longer in use by campus departments.

On Jan. 13, the Distribution Center will have a soft opening of its new surplus store for Buff OneCard holders. Previously available by appointment only, the store will now be open for walk-in shopping during the business hours of 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. The store will open to the general public beginning Jan. 27.

For over a year, the Property Services team has been working to create a new retail space to sell surplus property. Following significant interior construction, the store is finally ready to open its doors for the first time. The store offers furniture, electronics and other items that have come from departments on campus. Sales revenue will be split between Property Services and the departments on campus from which the items have come, with Property Services using its proceeds to offset the costs of processing and reselling the goods.

“The opening of the surplus store is a significant step toward upholding our campus’s sustainability values by promoting resourcefulness and reducing waste,” Chancellor Justin Schwartz said. “This initiative supports our commitment to environmental stewardship and fosters a culture of mindful consumption within our university community.”

Although the surplus store has been a resource to CU ��«��Ƶ constituents for decades, it has been accessible only by appointment and during biannual auctions. The creation of a storefront means more material will pass through the doors and generate more income for the Distribution Center and campus departments while saving shoppers money.

“I think people will be surprised at how great the prices are,” Property Services Program Manager Denise Worthington said. “We have a lot of furniture and computers, and we also get random but perfectly usable items from departments all over campus. The most unique thing I’ve seen pass through our facility was a gigantic inflatable buffalo.”

Worthington noted that she has also seen a high-powered telescope and a modular library system, but more common items include:

Office supplies
Sporting equipment
Sound equipment
Cameras
Phones
Costumes
Clothing

“I am grateful to Denise Worthington and Jon Sherman, along with the rest of our property services team, for making this dream a reality,” Vice Chancellor for Infrastructure and Resilience Chris Ewing said. “We will reduce the environmental impact we are making as a campus by increasing our reach and ability to get perfectly good items into the community for reuse.”

Repurposed items are accepted by appointment only.

The CU ��«��Ƶ Surplus Store, which is expanding to offer public access and regular business hours, has used furniture, electronics and more for sale at affordable prices.

The deadlines to submit proposals for summer 2025 and the 2025–26 academic year Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Impact Grants are fast approaching. Faculty and staff interested in submitting proposals for the seed grant funding are encouraged to do so in January and February.

Proposals for summer 2025 funding should be submitted by Jan. 17 and proposals for 2025–26 academic year funding should be submitted by Feb. 14.

Faculty and staff interested in learning more about the impact grants and how to apply for them can also register for virtual information sessions taking place Jan. 8 from 11 a.m. to noon and Jan. 28 from 10 to 11 a.m.

Resources to support the development of seed grant proposals are available on the Impact Grant SharePoint site.

This grant program is sponsored by the Office of the Senior Vice Chancellor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. Inquiries, questions and requests for additional support may be sent to the Program and Assessment Manager Alison Hanson at alison.hanson@colorado.edu.

The Excellence in Leadership Program (ELP), hosted by the CU system Employee Services office, provides an exceptional opportunity for faculty from the four CU campuses and system office to become effective leaders. ELP fellows participate in a nine-month (August–April) program designed to broaden their understanding of the University of Colorado and to equip them with the skills needed for effective leadership.

Eligibility and commitment

The CU ��«��Ƶ faculty nomination and selection process occurs in the spring semester. CU ��«��Ƶ selects eight faculty fellows annually.
Eligible nominees include tenured faculty who have shown their commitment to the university and their potential as future leaders. They may or may not currently serve in a leadership position.
The program involves a significant time commitment from August to April that begins with a two-day retreat and monthly workshops held at the four CU campuses and the CU system office (see the 2024–25 schedule as an example; dates vary annually). Additionally, fellows engage in monthly conversations with CU ��«��Ƶ senior leaders on the CU ��«��Ƶ campus from September to April.

Interested? Learn more about the program and indicate your interest to your dean so they may consider nominating you (faculty self-nominations are not accepted). Nominations are due Feb. 7, and successful nominees and their deans will be notified by April 30.

Joanne Kim, a CU ��«��Ƶ computer science student, was recognized by Congressman Joe Neguse with the Mollie H. Beattie Congressional Award for Distinguished Environmental Scholarship on Friday, Dec. 13, for an original short film on food waste.

Kim, and co-collaborator Kimberly Bernal, took first place at the Estes Valley Land Trust Environmental Film Festival for their film highlighting the environmental and economic impacts of food waste. This award is named for Mollie H. Beattie, an influential and inspiring conservationist, whose work as the first female U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services director focused on environmental preservation and wildlife conservation advocacy.

In addition to being recognized personally by Neguse, Kim’s achievement was celebrated by her father; CU ��«��Ƶ Chancellor Justin Schwartz; Dean Keith Molenaar, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences; Professor Ken Anderson, department chair, Computer Science; and Senator Janice Marchman, Colorado General Assembly.
