Though the pandemic prevented an in-person graduation ceremony for the Class of 2021, graduating students and their families and friends were invited to a livestreamed ceremony honoring their accomplishments on Thursday, May 6 at 3 p.m. This is the recording of the ceremony, which includes welcoming remarks by ATLAS Director Mark D Gross; an address by Donna Auguste, who graduated from ATLAS in 2019 with her PhD; individual recognition of each graduating student; and an informal collection of personal farewell and congratulatory messages. 

The ceremony officially recognizes students completing requirements for the following courses of study:

• Master of Science, Creative Technology and Design
• Bachelor of Science, Creative Technology and Design

Guest Speaker 

Donna Auguste,  CEO, Auguste Research Group

Donna Auguste earned her PhD in Technology, Media and Society from the University of Colorado's College of Engineering and Applied Science, ATLAS Institute, in 2019. She returned to academia after a distinguished career as an engineer, data scientist, entrepreneur and philanthropist. Since completing her doctorate, she founded Auguste Research Group near San Diego, California, where she is CEO. Auguste Research Group conducts research involving sensors and actionable data, and advocates for diversity in STEM education. Auguste and her team teach hands-on STEM workshops for children, with a focus on including children from communities that are underrepresented in technical fields, including Black, Latinx, indigenous, neuro-diverse and Deaf. In 2001, Auguste founded the Leave a Little Room Foundation, a non-profit organization that, for 10 years, provided housing, schools, electricity and medical care for members of impoverished communities around the world. Earlier in her career, Auguste co-founded Freshwater Software and served as a senior engineering manager at Apple Computer, where she led the software engineering team that developed the Apple Newton, the first personal digital assistant and a forerunner to the iPhone.
