Biography
David B. Balkin is Professor Emeritus of Management at the Leeds School of Business at the University of Colorado at «Ƶ, USA. He received his Ph.D. in human resource management from the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.Prior to joining the University of Colorado, he served on the faculties of Northeastern University in Boston and Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. He has published over 90 articles in scientific and practice journals which have received over 19,000 citations in Google Scholar on human resource management topics. His research publications have appeared in prestigious journals that include the Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Management, Journal of Management Studies, Research Policy, Academy of Management Perspectives, Personnel Psychology, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Business Venturing, and Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice. He has also published articles in practice journals that include California Management Review, Organizational Dynamics, Business Strategy Review, Compensation and Benefits Review and HR Magazine. His current research focuses on the management of employee reward systems, the effect of gender in the workplace, and the effect of artificial intelligence (AI) on employee relations in the workplace. His publications have been selected as the best article of the year published in the Academy of Management Journal, finalist for best article of the year in Academy of Management Learning and Education, and best article of the year in Journal of Management Education.
Professor Balkin is an author of several leading texts on management and human resources used by students worldwide that include Managing Human Resources, 9th ed. (Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2020) and Management: People, Performance and Change, (Pearson/Prentice Hall, 2012). Managing Human Resources has been adapted and translated for the Spanish-speaking market and is used by students at universities throughout Spain and Latin America. Professor Balkin has served as Chair of the Management Department at University of Colorado and also has served on advisory boards of several non-profit organizations. He currently serves as an associate editor for Human Resource Management Review (Elsevier Publishing, Oxford, UK) and has served on the editorial boards of the Academy of Management Journal and the Journal of Management. He also serves on the Organization Committee for the European Rewards Management Conference which meets biannually in Brussels, Belgium. Professor Balkin has worked as an expert witness on legal cases representing plaintiffs who allege being victims of employment and pay discrimination.
Professor Balkin has extensive international experience teaching courses on Leadership and Human Resource Management. He currently teaches Executive Leadership on a regular basis in the Master’s Program at the University of Regensburg in Germany. He previously taught General Management in the Executive MBA Program at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany. In addition, he has taught brief intensive business courses and seminars on Leadership or Human Resource Management topics at University of Toulouse (France), Audencia Business School (France), Copenhagen Business School (Denmark), Aalto University (Finland), ESADE Business School (Spain), Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the Indian School of Business (India).
