Application and selection process
To apply, an applicant compiles the items listed below according to these directions. We encourage applicants to visit our FAQ page to find answers to many commonly asked questions about the fellowship and to view resources available to fellows - this information may be helpful when preparing the application. Applications must be received by the March 1 deadline.

The application is available in December of each year. To apply, visit the CU Jobs website and upload the documents below to the fellowship posting (specific details are available here in December).

- Study Plan & Project Proposal
- Three Samples of Professional Work
Contact information for three references will be collected as part of the application process. We may request letters of recommendation at a later time if you are selected for an interview. This information will be kept confidential and viewable only by the search committee. References will be given ample time to provide letters once contacted. One reference should be your immediate supervisor or, for freelancers, an editor who has worked closely with you. Note that you do not need to provide a letter of recommendation with your application; only contact information is initially required.
A selection committee will review all applications, select ten candidates to be interviewed, and recommend five candidates for the fellowship. Applicants will be notified of selection around May 1.

Fellowship Year
The fellowship begins in mid-August with a week's orientation prior to classes beginning and continues into mid-May.
Eligibility
Five Ted Scripps Fellowships are awarded each year. The fellowship is open to full-time journalists working in any medium who are interested in advancing their knowledge of environmental issues. It is aimed at outstanding journalists committed to a career in professional journalism.
Applicants must have five years of full-time professional journalism experience and must also have a BA or BS college degree, at minimum. Applicants may include reporters, editors, producers, photojournalists, documentarians, and feature writers. Both salaried staff and full-time freelancers are welcome to apply. Prior experience in covering the environment is not required.
