The Creative Labs Center (CLC), one of ENVD’s specialized workshops and studio spaces, has been a hub of activity, hosting thousands of students and countless projects. This summer, however, the CLC welcomed a unique group of residents — a flock of birds.

Assistant Teaching Professor Jared Arp and Creative Labs Center Coordinator Kiera Cudmore spent much of the summer redesigning the remaining third floor studios while constructing new study spots, maker spaces and lounge seating on the western side of the building.

ENVD welcomes new faculty and staff

This fall, ENVD welcomes three new faculty, a postdoctoral associate and three staff members.

Associate Professor Jota Samper received the 2024 ESC Excellence in Faculty Community Engagement Award for the Medellin Practicum/Studio. The ESC Excellence Awards Program recognizes faculty, staff, students, and higher education institutions and their exemplary contributions to scholarship and the practice of community-engaged scholarship. Samper will be presented the award at the ESC Conference in Portland in October.

In July, Assistant Professor Elena Sabinson presented the paper The Pictorial is Neurodivergent: A Case for More Fidgets and Fewer Fixes at the ACM Conference on Designing Interactive Systems 2024 in Copenhagen. The paper advocates for designing products and systems that support self-determined behaviors over interventions aimed at "fixing" behaviors, through the lens of neurodiversity. It proposes a visual decision-map to guide ethical designs for behavior intervention and highlights "fidgets" as a product exemplar that encourages intuitive, self-determined actions.

Sabinson was a co-author on the paper Design of Two Morphing Robot Surfaces and Results from a User Study On What People Want and Expect of Them, Towards a “Robot-Room,” which was published in the 2024 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA). This work explores adaptive robotic surfaces and human-robot interaction expectations.

Last day to add or swap a 16-week course (11:59 p.m.)
Last day to waitlist in a closed 16-week class and last day to be automatically enrolled from a 16-week waitlist (11:59 p.m.). See Waitlist for a Closed Class.

September 11:
Last day to drop a 16-week course in without a “W” (11:59 p.m.). See Drop a Class.
A grade of “W” in a course means a student dropped the course after the initial drop deadline. “W” grades do not impact GPA and no credit is granted with a course in which a student has a “W.”
Last day to withdraw from all Fall semester courses with 100% refund (11:59 p.m.). See Withdraw for the Semester.
