Chair Update
We hosted our first Alumni and Friends of CU Geography Celebration in June. Over thirty alums who received undergraduate and graduate degrees from CU Geography joined the festivities. We look forward to hosting similar events in the future. Many thanks to Alumna Coe London, who helped organize the celebration and hosted a warm and welcoming happy hour at her home in ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ.
This semester, we welcomed two new faculty members to our department: Isaac Rivera and Katherine Siegel. Dr. Rivera received his PhD in Geography from the University of Washington, and his research focuses on Digital Geographies, Latinx and Indigenous Geographies, Geo-Humanities, Urban Settler Colonialism, and Environmental Justice. Dr. Siegel received her PhD from the University of California, Berkeley. Her interdisciplinary research focuses on environmental data science and sustainable and equitable management of ecosystems within rapidly changing environments due to climate change. In January, Dr. Sisimac Duchicela will join the faculty. Dr. Duchicela received her PhD in Geography and the Environment from the University of Texas, Austin. She is a biogeographer focusing on the climate changes to high elevation landscapes. We are overjoyed to have these fantastic scholars join our Geography faculty as Assistant Professors.
This year, we had two promotions among our faculty: Dr. Yaffa Truelove was promoted from Assistant Professor to Associate Professor with tenure, and Dr. Jill Harrison was promoted from Associate Professor to Full Professor. Congratulations, Dr. Truelove and Dr. Harrison, for achieving these well-earned and deserved promotions.
As illustrated in this newsletter, our undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and alums continue to contribute novel and groundbreaking research in Geography and related disciplines. CU Geography was internationally recognized for our exceptional research, leadership, and teaching in the 2024 Shanghai Academic Rankings. We continue to strive for excellence in scholarship, teaching, and service, along with a commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice. Thank you for your attention and your support of CU Geography.
