Peter H. Molnar Endowed Scholarship
ÌýÌýÌý put Peter H. Molnar Endowed Scholarship in the Gift Designation Field
The Peter H. Molnar Endowed Scholarship Fund in Earth, Atmospheric and Climate Science was established by Peter’s family to provide undergraduate scholarship awards for transfer students enrolled in the Department of Geological Sciences at the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ, who are residents of the state of Colorado.Ìý The donors intend that this scholarship support underrepresented students in the Department. Underrepresented students include those students from geographic areas and socioeconomic backgrounds who are historically underrepresented in the field of geosciences and/or climate science. Preference will be given to students who are the first generation in their family to attend college.
Peter H. Molnar was a Distinguished Professor at the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and passed away on 23 June 2022 in Lyons, Colorado. Peter was known for his pioneering research in understanding the dynamics of plate tectonics and continental deformation, especially in relation to mountain building and the evolution of the Earth’s landscape, and was awarded the Crafoord Prize in Geosciences in 2014. Peter received an undergraduate degree in Physics from Oberlin College in 1965, a PhD from Columbia University in 1970, did postdoctoral work at UC San Diego, and was on the faculty at MIT from 1974-2000. In 2001 he accepted an appointment as a Professor in the Department of Geological Sciences and Fellow of CIRES, ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. Molnar mentored many early career scientists, and would often bring together groups of scientists to work together on interdisciplinary problems. Peter had a remarkable commitment to understanding the work of his colleagues, carefully reading and evaluating publications well outside his area of expertise. Molnar’s broad intellectual appetite fueled his innovative perspectives, making him not only a brilliant geophysicist but also a profoundly interdisciplinary thinker.
