Program Description

AB Nexus is requesting proposals that expand and strengthen areas of research collaboration between CU Anschutz and CU «Ƶ researchers. By integrating expertise across our two campuses, AB Nexus aims to support interdisciplinary research activities and create opportunities to improve human health and well-being. AB Nexus endeavors to seed projects and partnerships that will become competitive for high-impact extramural funding.

Teams submitting a proposal should aim to answer relevant research questions involving basic, translational, clinical and epidemiological approaches, such as:

  • What challenges related to human health and well-being could be investigated via unique collaborations between two or more disciplines?
  • What new discoveries related to the study of disease and other factors that negatively impact human health and well-being could be achieved?
  • What unmet needs related to operations within clinical science, clinical systems, health services, or population health could inform and drive the development of novel research technologies and capabilities?
  • What opportunities are there for two or more disciplines to come together to translate innovations that positively impact humans, patients, practice or population health?

New for the 2025 cycle, AB Nexus will accept/fund proposals via two mechanisms that vary by project scope, budget/award duration and application/review process. These are outlined under 2025 Program Tracks below. You can also refer to the Appendix for a side-by-side comparison to help determine which mechanism is right for your team.

2025 Program Tracks

Exploratory/Broad Announcement ($75K, 18 months)

This mechanism is for teams that have not previously worked together, but that have identified a path for how integrated, joint work could facilitate the study of unique research concepts. There are no biomedical topic limitations, but projects submitted via the Exploratory/Broad Announcement are encouraged to explore research concepts that have been identified as areas of growth in the research community. Proposals may explore basic and translational investigations of disease pathology, therapeutics discovery, or diagnostics; clinical investigations with application to population health, health services or implementation science research; etc.

Eligibility

Project teams must include one principal investigator (PI) from CU Anschutz and one PI from CU «Ƶ.

To be eligible:

  • PIs from CU Anschutz must be Tenure-Track Assistant Professors (job code 1103) within the first three years of their appointment and meet their school and/or department eligibility for being a principal investigator on R01 or equivalent grants. Research Associates (job code 1306) within the first three years of their appointment are eligible if they hold a doctoral degree or its equivalent as determined by the dean or their designee.
  • PIs from CU «Ƶ must be Tenure-Track Assistant Professors (job code 1103) who hold an appointment of half-time or greater, or Research Associates (job code 1306) within the first three years of their appointment.
  • The team must be new. The CU Anschutz and CU «Ƶ PIs should not have a history of collaboration.
  • Applicants may submit only one AB Nexus proposal in the role of PI but may be listed as a collaborator on multiple proposals.

Application Requirements

Proposers to the Exploratory/Broad Announcement must submit a concept paper. The following is required:

  • Concept Paper (2 pages maximum): Include a summary of the problem to be addressed and why it is important or innovative. Outline the proposed research program including specific aims, abbreviated research plan, and expected outcomes, including plans for extramural sustainability. Concept papers that exceed two pages will be considered non-responsive and administratively withdrawn.
  • NIH or NSF Biosketch for both PIs
  • Rough Order of Magnitude Budget (template provided)

Review Process

A small group of scientific reviewers (two from each campus) will complete an abbreviated study section review of all Exploratory/Broad Announcement applications. Concept papers will be evaluated against the review criteria described below.

Special Topic Announcement: Quantum and Human Health ($350K, 24 months)

This mechanism is for both teams that have not previously worked together and those that have a history of collaboration. The goal of this mechanism is to drive innovation and collaboration in specific areas of research identified as federal priorities based on shifting funding trends.

Proposals submitted via the Special Topics Announcement must align with the following biomedical topic. Projects outside of this topic area will be considered non-responsive and administratively withdrawn.

  • Quantum and Human Health: Explores applications of quantum science related to medical research and healthcare. Topics may include (but are not limited to) quantum sensing for early disease detection; quantum computing for drug discovery; quantum imaging for improved medical imaging; quantum cryptography for secure health data management; or quantum-based therapies and interventions.

Eligibility

Project teams must include one principal investigator (PI) from CU Anschutz and one PI from CU «Ƶ.

To be eligible:

  • PIs from CU Anschutz must be Tenured or Tenure-Track Faculty and meet their school and/or department eligibility for being a principal investigator on R01 or equivalent grants. Contact abnexus_seedgrants@colorado.edu if you have questions about CU Anschutz eligibility.
  • PIs from CU «Ƶ must be Tenured or Tenure-Track Faculty who hold an appointment of half-time or greater.
  • Applicants may submit only one AB Nexus proposal in the role of PI but may be listed as a collaborator on multiple proposals.

Special Topic Application Requirements

Proposers to the Special Topic Announcement must submit a brief slide deck and give a virtual pitch presentation.

The following is required:

  • Project Summary (2-3 page maximum): Outline the proposed research program and specific aims, expected outcomes, potential impact, and long-term project sustainability.
  • Slide Deck (10 slide maximum): Slides should provide more in-depth program description and must include all the following sections:
    • Background
    • Significance & innovation
    • Methodology & aims
    • Research team
    • Brief budget justification
    • Plan for extramural funding/sustainability
  • NIH or NSF Biosketch for both PIs
  • Rough Order of Magnitude Budget (template provided)

Review Process

In addition to the 2-3 page Project Summary listed above, applicants are required to prepare and deliver a 15-minute pitch presentation to a small panel of reviewers. Panels will be topic-specific and are anticipated to include internal and external reviewers. The presentation will entail a 10-minute pitch followed by a 5-minute Q&A between PIs and reviewers. Pitches will be evaluated against the review criteria described below.

Budgetary Guidance

Unallowable Costs

Proposals for or with the following expenses in the budget are not eligible:

  • Projects with a primary focus on curriculum development
  • Faculty course or teaching buy-out
  • Payment to collaborators from other institutions

Proposals for projects that could be supported with existing funds, such as funding from other internal or external sources, are discouraged.

Allowable Costs

In addition to costs for supplies and materials, the use of core services, etc., some salary support can be requested based on role/campus:

  • The CU Anschutz PI may request the equivalent of 0.04 FTE. Salary support for faculty collaborators/co-investigators is not allowed.
  • The CU «Ƶ PI may request up to two weeks of summer salary. Salary support for faculty collaborators/co-investigators is not allowed.
  • Non-investigators (i.e., postdocs, students) from both campuses may request an amount fitting to the work proposed.
  • Special Topic Announcement only: Third party contractor support is permitted if the contractor directly supports the research and is an integral part of the project.

Review Criteria

Project submitted via both the Exploratory/Broad Announcement and the Special Topics Announcement will be evaluated against the criteria described below. Projects with potential to increase sustained collaboration across the CU Anschutz and CU «Ƶ Campuses will be prioritized, especially those with potential for long-term collaboration.

  • Intellectual Merit: Merit and quality of proposed research; potential to contribute value and advance knowledge (particularly factoring in the novel approach to concept(s)).
  • Impact: Measurable benefit of basic, translational, clinical or epidemiological approaches to significantly improve human well-being.
  • Interdisciplinarity: Demonstration of fully integrated research collaborations and partnerships across disciplines. Of high interest are proposals that indicate a specific plan to grow and expand the team over time.
  • Leverage/Sustainability: Long-term potential for growth of the proposed research activity, including identified or prospective support from external funding agencies. Of high interest are proposals that identify specific external opportunities, ideally growing in magnitude or complexity, and a timeline in which the team plans to pursue them.

Consideration of review criteria will acknowledge the distinct definitions of merit, impact and success that exist across various disciplines.
