The third annual Dorothy Martin Faculty Awards and Doctoral Student Scholarships for spring 2001 have been awarded to three members of the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ community. The awards honor women who exemplify the ideals of Professor Emeritus Dorothy Martin, who was a faculty member in the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ psychology department for 46 years and who was instrumental in establishing the first CU Women's Center in 1964.

Four finalists for the position of dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ are scheduled to visit the campus this month, according to William Kaempfer, associate vice chancellor for academic affairs and chair of the search committee.

Seven distinguished engineers will be honored for their contributions in education, research and invention, government service, industry and commerce, and private practice by CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's College of Engineering and Applied Science at its 36th annual Engineering Awards Banquet April 6.

John Wortman, general curator at the Denver Zoo, will visit the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus to give a talk about gorillas in captivity on Monday, April 16, at 6:30 p.m. in Eaton Humanities room 150.

Distinguished Professor Charles Wilkinson of the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will read selections from his latest book, "Messages From Frank's Landing: A Story of Salmon, Treaties and the Indian Way" on April 16. The free event will be from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Public Library Auditorium, 11th Street and Arapahoe Avenue, and is open to the public. A book signing and reception will follow. The event is sponsored by the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Center of the American West, the Native American Rights Fund and the ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ Public Library Foundation.

Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will tour the Milky Way during "City of Stars," Friday, April 13, at 7:30 p.m. at the planetarium. The pre-recorded show explores some of Earth's galactic neighbors - stars, nebulae and clusters. Visitors also will tour distant galaxies beyond the Milky Way. Tickets go on sale at 7 p.m. the night of the show and are $4 for adults and $3 for seniors and children. Fiske Planetarium is located at Regent Drive and Kittredge Loop Drive on the CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ campus.

Margaret Miles, one of America's leading scholars of religion and the body in late antiquity and medieval Europe, will present an illustrated lecture on "Achieving the Christian Body: Visual Incentives to Imitation of Christ in the 14th-15th Centuries" on Monday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Eaton Humanities room 150 at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. Miles is dean, academic vice president and Dillenberger Professor of Historical Theology at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, Calif.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will offer a variety of events in honor of Native American Awareness Week April 15-20 including a children's Pow Wow, a concert and a session with storyteller and magician Autumn Morning Star. All activities are free and open to the public and were organized by Oyate, CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's indigenous student organization. This year's events focus on the performing arts, according to Theresa Halsey, Oyate's community adviser.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will kick off a new campus-wide interdisciplinary program in Developing Areas Research and Teaching with a lecture series in April. Geography Professor Stuart Corbridge of the University of Miami and the London School of Economics will kick off the lecture series with a talk on "Development as Freedom: The Spaces of Amartya Sen," on Friday, April 13, at 4 p.m. in Eaton Humanities room 150.
