Enrollment at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ has hit another all-time high for degree-seeking students this fall with a total enrollment of 26,035, according to Barbara Schneider, executive director of enrollment management. The freshman class is 12 percent higher than in 1999 but the rate of growth in overall enrollment this year is smaller than in previous years. Decreases in graduate student and transfer student enrollment have offset gains in undergraduate enrollment.

Several University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ professors and science educators will speak to teachers on topics ranging from "Smart Goo" to "The Physics of Basketball" at the Colorado Science Convention on Sept. 29. 1,000 science teachers from throughout the state are expected to attend the daylong event at the Denver Merchandize Mart, 451 E. 58th Ave.

The Center of the American West at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will present a panel discussion titled "At a Loss for Words: The Endangerment of Native American Languages," Tuesday, Oct. 3rd, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Forum Room at the University Memorial Center. The panel will discuss concerns linguists have with the loss of language diversity and the implications it will have for individual cultures and all of humanity. Native American languages, which are among the most endangered in the world, will be the main focus of the panel.

CU Latino Advocacy and the United Mexican American Students (UMAS) at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ are sponsoring "Reliving El Corrido," with singer and Mexican American musicologist Dr. Jesus "Chuy" Negrete on Tuesday, Sept. 26, at 6 p.m. in room 150 of the Humanities Building on campus.

Political science Professor Susan Clarke of the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ and 39 other outstanding faculty members from across the nation have been selected as the 2000-2001 class of Carnegie scholars. Clarke and her colleagues were selected by the Pew National Fellowship Program for Carnegie Scholars in recognition and support of their efforts to advance teaching and learning of their disciplines in the natural sciences, mathematics, social sciences and the arts.

Fiske Planetarium at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will present "Searching for Distant Worlds," a program chronicling the recent discovery of several new planets beyond our solar system, on Sept. 29 and Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m.

Chemistry and biochemistry Professor David Nesbitt will kick off the 2000-2001 University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ CU Wizards season with plenty of booms and fizzles as he presents "Fun with Molecules," Saturday, Sept. 30, at 9:30 a.m. in the Cristol Chemistry and Biochemistry Building, room 140. Professor NesbittÂ’s show will shed light on the wonders of chemical reactions with several experiments, like turning a pickle into a light bulb and generating light without heat – just like fireflies.

With a gift of appreciated stock, Ruth and Ken Wright of ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ have endowed a directorship with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival at the University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ. The fund will perpetually generate support to attract distinguished directors who will bring their artistic talents to ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ each summer.

The University of Colorado at ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ will hold its annual Study Abroad Peer Advising Fair Tuesday, Sept. 26, in the University Memorial Center's Glenn Miller Ballroom from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Students will be able to gather general information about CU-ºù«ÍÞÊÓƵ's 140 study abroad programs including program costs, scholarship opportunities and financial aid. Students also can explore new program options in Cuba, the Southern Cone (Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay), Fiji, London, Berlin, Norway, Russia, Jordan and Turkey.
